Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Samuel grew up in the tabernacle. What two men of the priestly line were stealing the sacrifices and lying with women at the door of the tabernacle during this time?

Answer: Phinehas and Hophni

According to I Samuel 1, it was Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli, who was the high priest at the time. Usually Hophni's name comes first when the men are mentioned together, but I switched the order in hopes of making the question a little harder.
2. What special thing did the Lord do for Samuel as he grew up?

Answer: Let none of his words fall to the ground (everything he said happened)

According to Samuel 3:19-21, God established Samuel to be a prophet and "let none of his words fall to the ground." The fact that his prophecies always came true gave proof to the nation of Israel that God had indeed spoken to Samuel.
3. Samuel judged Israel and traveled in a circuit to do so. At what town did his circuit end? (Hint: his house was there.)

Answer: Ramah

The end of Samuel's circuit was at Ramah, according to I Samuel 6:17. His house was also in the same city.
4. Samuel was chosen by God to anoint Saul king of Israel. What special part of meat did Samuel tell the cook to save for Saul?

Answer: The shoulder

It was actually the shoulder (I Samuel 9:23-24). Samuel had told the cook beforehand to save that piece for Saul, and the cook did it! The exact significance of the shoulder is somewhat controversial, but obviously it was a section of meat that showed honor to Saul and his coming position as king of Israel.
5. Samuel called Israel together to what place to proclaim Saul king?

Answer: Mizpeh

It was Mizpeh. The Israelites had also gathered together at Mizpeh in the time of the Judges to go to war against Benjamin. Evidently it was a prominent meeting place for the nation. (I Samuel 10:17)
6. Before the time of Saul, Samuel himself defeated the Philistines in a battle by the power of God. What was Samuel doing when the Philistines were about to attack him?

Answer: Offering a lamb

This is one of my favorite Biblical battles. The Philistines came to attack, but Samuel was offering up a lamb and crying to the Lord for Israel. God thundered on the Philistines in response, and the Israelites won the battle! (I Samuel 7:9-11)
7. David fled to Samuel when Saul tried to kill him. What happened when messengers from Saul came to Samuel to take David?

Answer: The messengers prophesied

Actually Saul went himself as well, and he too helplessly prophesied instead of being able to capture David! The full story is in I Samuel 19:18-24.
8. Samuel died, and the people mourned him. Where does the Bible say they buried him?

Answer: In his house

Surprisingly, it was in his house, according to I Samuel 25:1! The people of Israel buried him in Ramah, which was the end of his judging circuit.
9. Something rather unusual happened some time after Samuel died. Which of the following best describes this unusual occurrence?

Answer: He talked with a Jewish king

Samuel was not too pleased over the whole thing, but King Saul could not get God to answer him, and he consulted a woman with a familiar spirit to bring Samuel up from the dead to speak with him. See I Samuel 28 for the full story.
10. Samuel's last prophecy was fulfilled just like all the others. What was the last prophecy that the prophet Samuel is recorded as giving?

Answer: Israel would be defeated by the Philistines

This prophecy was given to King Saul, and Samuel prophesied King Saul himself and his sons would die in the doomed battle. He said that the next day Saul and his sons would be "with me." Quite the interesting prophecy! The next day it came true. (I Samuel 31 records the battle and Saul's defeat.)
