Hannah and Peninnah were the two wives of Elkanah. Peninnah could have children, but Hannah could not.

Eli thought she was drunk when he heard her praying at the temple. Hannah promised God she would give her son back to God if he would give her a son. Eli told Hannah that God would grant her request for a son. Hannah named her son Samuel which means "heard of God".

Hannah honored her promise she made to God and after Samuel was weaned she gave him to Eli. Samuel became the fifteenth judge of Israel.
