Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Take out the beam from thine eye."

Answer: Both

This is from the Talmud, AND more or less the same quote may also be found in the Gospels: "Cast out the beam out of thine own eye" (Matt. 7:5, KJV) or "Take the plank out of your own eye" (NIV). All Talmudic quotations in this quiz will be quoted from "The Wisdom of the Talmud," a short collection of sayings selected from the Talmud and compiled into a book edited by Madison C. Peters.

This book, unfortunately, does not cite chapter and verse, but quiztakers can read that short book to find these quotes, if interested. For Gospel quotes, I will cite book, chapter, and verse.
2. "He who wishes to be forgiven must forgive."

Answer: Both

The above quote is from the Talmud. An almost identical saying, though in the second person, can be found in Luke 6:37: "Forgive and you will be forgiven."
3. "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us."

Answer: Gospels

The quote comes from John 1:14 and refers to the Incarnation of Christ, and therefore is unique to the Gospels.
4. "A person dependent on the table of another has the world darkened."

Answer: Talmud

This saying is unique to the Talmud, and nothing very similarly phrased can be found in the Gospels, though in the New Testament the Apostle Paul does emphasize the importance of not being unnecessarily dependent on others, saying that he who does not work shall not eat.
5. "The pious fool, the hypocrite, and the flagellating Pharisee are destroyers of human society."

Answer: Talmud

This quote comes from the Talmud and, although Christ certainly offers much criticism of the Pharisees and hypocrites in the Gospels, he does not say anything phrased quite like this.
6. "Man sees the mote in his neighbour's eye, but knows not of the beam in his own."

Answer: Both

The above quote comes from the Talmud, AND a very similar saying is found in the Gospels: "And why beholdest though the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceiveth not the beam that is in thine own?" (Luke 6:41, KJV).
7. "Cling steadfastly to that which is good."

Answer: Talmud

This quote comes from the Talmud. Nothing very similar is found in the Gospels. However, the Apostle Paul does say something very similar in the Book of Romans: "cling to what is good" (12:9, NIV).
8. "He who helps himself will be helped by God."

Answer: Talmud

This saying, which is unique to the Talmud, has become a kind of English proverb, phrased as: "God helps those who help themselves."
9. "The measure man metes to man, the same will be meted to him."

Answer: Both

This is quoted from the Talmud, AND a very similar saying is found in the Gospels: "With the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again" (Luke 6:38).
10. "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men to do so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven...except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of Heaven."

Answer: Gospels

Christ says these words in Matthew 5:19-20.
11. "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath."

Answer: Both

The above quote comes from Mark 2:27, KJV. A very similar saying may be found in the Talmud: "The Sabbath is given to man, not man to the Sabbath."
12. "Whatever happens or doesn't, a presence is helping."

Answer: Neither

This is the one quotation in this quiz that comes from neither the Talmud nor the Gospels. It comes, rather, from a poem by the Islamic mystic Rumi, called "The Thief."
13. "Thy neighbour's property must be as sacred to thee as thine own."

Answer: Talmud

This emphasis on property rights is unique to the Talmud, though Christ does say to "love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matthew 19:19, KJV).
14. "Be always sincere in your yea and your nay."

Answer: Both

This quote comes from the Talmud, AND the Gospels say something very similiar: "Let your communication be yea, yea, nay, nay" (Matthew 5:37, KJV). Both quotes mean that you should say "yes" when you mean yes and "no" when you mean no. In the passage from Matthew, Christ is making the point that if a person is always sincere in his or her yes and no, it will never be necessary to add an oath.
15. "Poverty comes from God, but not dirt."

Answer: Talmud

A unique saying on the virtue of cleanliness, found only in the Talmud.
