Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not a commonly acknowledged principle of Jainism?

Answer: Racism

Satya means Truth, Ahimsa means Non-Violence, and Anekantvaada means Considering Multiple Points of View.
2. Samyag Darshan, Samyag Gnan, and Samyag Charitra are known as the what?

Answer: Three Jewels of Jainism

According to Jain belief, these three jewels show the path to Nirvana/Moksha. Samyag Darshan means Right Faith, Samyag Gnan means Right Knowledge and Samyag Charitra means Right Conduct.
3. What is the ultimate bliss called, after all karmas have been destroyed?

Answer: Moksha

In Jainism kevalgnan is omniscience, achieved when the four karmas attached to the soul have been destroyed. Mohaniya is a type of karma arising from lust, ego, and greed. Oopapat is the method through which gods and devils alike are born.
4. How does one attain Moksha?

Answer: Through benevolence towards all living beings

This means all true Jains are vegetarians, because to eat meat or animal products which do harm to the animals they come from is considered not to be for the good of the animal.
5. What is a Tirthankar?

Answer: Someone has helped others on the path to liberation

A ganadhar really is a disciple of a Tirthankar.
6. According to Jain beliefs, who was the founder of Jainism?

Answer: It has existed forever

The others are important figures in recent Jain history (not all lived on Earth).
7. According to most non-Jain historians, who founded Jainism?

Answer: Mahavira/Vardhman

Mahavira lived from 599 B.C. to 527 B.C. and his existence is as confirmed as that of Jesus (even though the latter is irrelevant to this quiz). He was the 24th Tirthankar of this ara (era), with Parshwanath being the 23rd. Bharat's brother, Bahubali, was the first to attain Moksha, and was the son of Rushabdev, the first Tirthankar. Most historians don't acknowledge the Jain claims that Jainism lasted forever.
P.S. Most Jains don't own pets because they view it as imprisonment of the animal, and keeping it from its natural environment, where it would be more content.
8. Is/are there a god(s) in Jainism?

Answer: No

While Jainism is sometimes considered pantheistic because it teaches that the divine is found in all things, it does not have a concept of a unitary divine force. Godliness is inherent in every living thing, but needs to be realised and manifested by the soul releasing itself from karmic matter.
9. Which of the following foods can be eaten by Jains?

Answer: Dairy products

As long as the cattle are milked in a humane way, Jainism is not opposed to milk consumption. Honey is not allowed because it is the primary food of bees. Root vegetables are not normally allowed, but most Jains eat them anyway.
10. What are the two main sects of Jainism?

Answer: Shvetambar and Digambar

Shvetambar monks wear one piece of cloth, they believe that women can attain Moksha, and believe that there are still some untampered Jain texts these days. Digambars believe the opposite: monks wear nothing, women cannot achieve Moksha, all Jain texts have been modified.
