Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Catholics, there are three theological virtues. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Justice

Theological virtues are those virtues infused by God and related to salvation, where God is the goal.
Faith is defined as the virtue of believing the things revealed by God to be true, under His guidance and inspiration. Hope is also a divinely infused virtue by which, with confidence, we expect the divine assistance, eternal happiness and the means to attain it. Charity refers to the loving relationship with God and our fellow human beings.
2. The Catholic Church says that of all the virtues, one is the most excellent one. Which one is it?

Answer: Charity

Charity is also defined as "Divine Friendship" or friendship with God and all His children. Charity lifts man beyond the limits of his human nature and lets him be at home with God. Like every true and perfect friendship, it extends to those loved by God, His children. Without Charity or Divine Friendship, all other virtues are not practiced to the fullest.
3. Which of the following is not a sin against the virtue of Charity?

Answer: Gluttony

Gluttony is a sin against Temperance which is a cardinal virtue, as it regulates only the person's behavior. Drunkenness is, as well, a sin against Temperance. Hate, envy and discord are sins against Charity because they are against friendship or love for another human being.
4. Blasphemy is a sin against which virtue?

Answer: Faith

Blasphemy is a sin against the external profession of Faith, for it is a denial of God's teachings.
5. Cardinal virtues are those which help man attain God by rectifying the moral life of an individual in regards to himself. Of the following virtues, which is a cardinal virtue?

Answer: Temperance

Temperance is the virtue of moderation, of order and restraint controlled by reason. In other words, Temperance controls the disposition of man's sensual powers by unifying them with harmony.
6. This cardinal virtue is also defined as "firmness of soul" in the general sense, but as a cardinal virtue, it is the virtue needed to endure the trials of life.

Answer: Fortitude

Of the cardinal virtues, Fortitude and Temperance are individual virtues because they are only concerned with oneself. Justice and Prudence help man in relation to other human beings.
7. Social virtues, the virtues affecting man's behavior with others, are related to the virtue of Justice because they regulate how man gives "his due" to his neighbor. One social virtue is defined as the virtue inclining man to render to parents and country the reverence and service due to them. By the same token, this virtue regulates the way children should behave with parents and superiors as well as the relationship between spouses. We use the word, in certain cases, as synonymous with compassion or sympathy. Which one is it?

Answer: Piety

There are two types of Piety. The virtue that regulates the relationship between spouses, parents and children is called Filial Piety. When it applies to your homeland, it is called Patriotic Piety.
This cardinal virtue is defined as the constant and perpetual will to render to everyone what is his due.
8. Which is the social virtue that inclines man to conduct himself agreeably and properly in his dealings with other members of society?

Answer: Affability

The purpose of Affability is to inject politeness into ordinary dealings of men. But the friendship it brings up should not be confused with the friendship of Charity, as this last one is not superficial as affability is.
9. The virtue that inclines man to acknowledge and to make recompense for particular and private favors received is:

Answer: Gratitude

The social virtues are Piety, Observance, Gratitude, Revenge (the punishment of crimes by the law), Truthfulness, Affability and Liberality.
10. Man differs from animals because God has endowed him with which of these?

Answer: All of them

Man has the capability to choose between good and evil, that is free will. Man also receives Divine Grace, or the help to practice Christian virtues and, unlike animals, man has an immortal soul that will exist beyond death.
