Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is NOT true about the LDS view of God?

Answer: God is an omni-present spirit without form.

The LDS church actually teaches that God has an eternal physical body; that He indeed has a physical, human-like form, but is an exalted, omnipotent being with a "Celestial" body.

Doctrine and Covenants Section 130, Verse 22 states: "22 The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us."
2. Which is true of the LDS view of the traditional Christian Trinity?

Answer: God The Father, God The Son, and The Holy Ghost are three, distinct, separate entities who are one in purpose.

Mormons more commonly refer to the Trinity as the God Head. It is composed of God The Father, Jesus Christ (God The Son), and the Holy Spirit. God The Father and Jesus Christ both have perfect physical bodies, while the Holy Ghost has forgone having one in order to inspire, guide, and testify of Jesus Christ. The Holy Ghost will receive His body at a later time.
3. Mormons believe a man can become a God.

Answer: True

It is, in fact, one of the goals of Mormonism. Mormons strive to attain the Celestial Kingdom (The highest of the three Mormon Heavens). The highest level in the Celestial Kingdom itself is Exaltation, or Godhood. At this level, man and woman assume the role of Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother, and create their own spiritual offspring and their own worlds. LDS people also believe that families can be eternal.

"We all know that like begets like and that for the offspring to grow to the stature of his parent is a process infinitely repeated in nature. We can therefore understand that for a son of God to grow to the likeness of his Father in heaven is in harmony with natural law. We see this law demonstrated every few years in our own experience. Sons born to mortal fathers grow up to be like their fathers in the flesh. This is the way it will be with spirit sons of God. They will grow up to be like their Father in heaven. Joseph taught this obvious truth. As a matter of fact, he taught that through this process God himself attained perfection. From President Snow's understanding of the teachings of the Prophet on this doctrinal point, he coined the familiar couplet: 'As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.' This teaching is peculiar to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ." - Elder Marion G. Romney, General Conference, October 1964
4. Mormons accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior.

Answer: True

Although Mormonism is different in many ways from mainstream Christianity, this is not one of the differences. The LDS people consider themselves Christians in every sense of the word, and actually believe in being "born again" in Jesus Christ.
5. Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Answer: No

Joseph Smith was the Founder of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, and a much revered figure. Despite Mormons' adoration of this man, they do not worship him, and view him as a mortal man who was a Prophet of God.
6. Mormons believe that Adam was God.

Answer: False

There are all kinds of rumors and myth regarding this, but LDS doctrine makes it clear that they believe Adam to be the first man, but not God.
7. Mormons pray to past Mormon Prophets like Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and Spencer Kimball much the same way Catholics pray to their saints.

Answer: False

Ironically, Latter-Day Saints, do not actually practice praying to Saints, and actually do not designate Saints.
8. According to Church doctrine, Mormons are required to abstain from beverages that contain caffeine.

Answer: False

Many Mormons take their doctrine called "The Word Of Wisdom" to this extreme, but it is actually not forbidden by any doctrine of the church. This misconception usually becomes more common the further you move from Salt Lake City (the church's headquarters).

In Salt Lake City it is not entirely uncommon to find Mormon Bishops who consume caffeine on a moderate basis. Ironically, this myth is mainly propagated by LDS people. Hot drinks (interpreted to mean coffee and green and black teas) are forbidden by the Word Of Wisdom, and some have jumped to the conclusion that this is because of their caffeine content. (Decaf coffee is also forbidden by the way.) The Word Of Wisdom further forbids alcohol, tobacco, and excessive meat consumption, though the latter is often ignored. Perhaps this is because meat consumption is to be moderated while the rest are to be abstained from.
9. According to Church doctrine, Mormons are to abstain from consumption of alcohol.

Answer: True

"The Word Of Wisdom" explicitly warns against alcohol consumption. LDS people who choose to drink alcohol are not allowed inside LDS Temples. (Not to be confused with LDS Churches.)
10. Only white males may hold the Priesthood in the LDS church.

Answer: False

Only males may hold the Priesthood in the LDS religion, but race is no longer a qualifier. Blacks were allowed membership, but denied the Priesthood prior to 1978. However, the LDS Priesthood was never limited to only whites.
