Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We started our meal with Huevos rancheros, fried eggs served with salsa on tortillas. Which member of our group had to pass on this dish?

Answer: Jain

Jainism is an ancient Indian religion whose disciples believe that animals, plants and humans contain souls. Followers of Jainism are strict vegetarians, avoiding eggs, fish, meat or poultry, and they also shun most root vegetables because the entire plant is usually killed when harvesting the root, As Jains also believe in total respect for all living things, honey is also off the menu as this is profiting from the labour of the honeybee.
2. Let's try a fish dish. My Jewish friend willingly agrees but then points out that she can only eat one of the following. Which of these can she eat?

Answer: Seared Ahi Tuna

According to kashrut, the set of dietary laws that determine which foods a Jew may eat, water animals which do not have both fins and scales are not kosher. This rules out shellfish such as crab, lobster and crayfish as well as catfish and eels, the scales of which are only visible under a microscope.
3. Next on the menu is a beautiful mushroom risotto. However, my Hare Krishna Hindu friend declines this dish, due to which ingredient?

Answer: Mushroom

Not only would a Hare Krishna devotee avoid the mushrooms, they would also avoid the onion and garlic that are likely to be present in this dish. Mushrooms are considered an unfit food to offer up to Krishna due to their fungal nature, while onions and garlic, along with leeks and chives fall into the rajasic and tamasic groups. This means that they are responsible for increased passion and ignorance, making them unfit to offer to the Deity.
It is also believed that rajasic and tamasic foods are detrimental to the meditation and devotions which are a core of Krishna Hinduism.
4. OK. Let's try a succulent chicken breast stuffed with pesto. Oh wait a minute, one of our party might pass on this. Who is it and what is the offending ingredient?

Answer: Greek Orthodox and Basil

Basil isn't actually forbidden by the Greek Orthodox Church but many of its followers do avoid the herb due to its association with Christ's crucifixion. It is believed that the cross of Christ was discovered in 325 on a hill covered in basil plants, a plant that was unknown up to that point. For this reason, many Greek Orthodox members believe the herb should be admired rather than eaten.
5. Well, if the chicken won't work, we'll try the pork medallions, but there's another objection. The followers of which religion in our party are not permitted to eat pork?

Answer: Seventh-day Adventist Church

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is one of many religions that forbid the consumption of pork. These include Judaism, Islam, the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and followers of the Hebrew Roots Movement. These religions all believe the pig to be an unclean animal.
6. Sitting around the table, we have both a Sunni and Shia Muslim. What could I order from the menu without offending either of them?

Answer: Ostrich Steaks

According to hadith, the consumption of donkey meat is prohibited by Muhammad, although eating horse meat is permitted by Sunni Muslims. In Shia hadith, the eating of eels is not permitted and the consumption of frogs is disallowed in the hadith of 'Abd al-Rahmaan ibn 'Uthmaan. That just leaves the ostrich steaks which are not haram or forbidden.
7. Time to play safe I think with a simple green salad, but once again one of our party raises their hand to object. My Iraqi friend follows Yazidism, meaning he can not eat which ingredient?

Answer: Lettuce

The Yazidi religion is a monotheistic religion that can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamian religions. In recent times the Yazidis have been in the news because of their attempted genocide by Islamic State.
Lettuce is forbidden in Yazidism, although the reason is not clear. Some scholars believe it is because the Kurdish word for lettuce is "khas", which is also the Yazidi word for their saints and prophets from other religions, such as Jesus and, Hasan al-Basri, the companion of Mohammed.
It is also claimed that the lettuce ban is due to the story that after a 13th century Yazidi saint was executed in the city of Mosul, the massed crowds then pelted the corpse with heads of lettuce.
Whatever the reason, my Yazidi friend will be sending the salad back.
8. I am starting to wonder whether cancelling tonight and just taking these guys out for breakfast tomorrow would be safer. We could all go and have a Full English instead. My Jehovah's Witness friend is all for this, although he does point out he can't partake of which ingredient?

Answer: Black Pudding

Jehovah's Witnesses are not allowed to consume blood, so black pudding which is made from pig's blood mixed with fat and oatmeal is definitely off the menu.
9. One of our other friends agrees to join us for breakfast tomorrow, but does inform us that while he will enjoy the meal, he is not allowed to partake in the several cups of tea or coffee that often accompany a Full English. Which religion does he follow?

Answer: The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints

In The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, perhaps better known as the Mormons, followers are taught that the Lord commanded them to abstain from harmful substances including alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco and hot drinks. The church Doctrine and Covenants 89:7-9 read "And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly."
10. OK, time to call it a night. The conversation has flowed even if the food hasn't. Let's finish off with some alcohol and... ah come on. The follower of which religion is objecting this time?

Answer: Rastafarianism

Sake is revered as the most sacred of drinks in Shintoism and within Haitian Voodoo, rum is consumed to better allow the "iwa" spirits to enter the body. In the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, cachaca is offered to Exu, the dangerous messenger who travels between the human world and the divine world, so that leaves Rastafarianism. Rastafari follow a strict dietary law called ital, which states that all food must be completely natural and raw, and do not consume pork or any food prepared with salt.

They also do not drink alcohol, milk or coffee, but will drink herbal tea, for herbs are good.
