Answer: Old Believers

Nikon -- later to be known as St. Nikon by the canonical Russian Church -- altered elements of the liturgy from the phrasing of the Creed to the placement of the fingers during the Sign of the Cross. The Old Believers refused to recognize these decisions.

In 1905, Tsar Nicholas II signed an edict allowing the sect, and other religious minorities, to build its own churches and operate freely. In 1971 the Moscow Patriarchate revoked the excommunication it had placed on the Old Believers. Communities of the latter group still exist today, in the United States, Canada and Australia, as well as parts of Eastern Europe.
