Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these terms is used to describe the sanctifying grace that is in our soul after Baptism, especially the fact that it sticks in us unless we fall into mortal sin?

Answer: habitual

In other words, we receive helping grace from Baptism that gives a habit towards goodness. Baptism does leave an indelible (non-erasable) mark on our soul, just like Confirmation and Holy Orders do.
2. What is the term used for the physical symbol used in each sacrament?

Answer: matter

The essential matter in Baptism is water. Other optional things are the lighted candle, the Oil of Catechumens, and white garment. The essential form (words) in Baptism are, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
3. According to Catholic teaching, in every case one has to be a Christian in order to baptize someone else.

Answer: False

Normally a priest baptizes people, but in an emergency anyone can baptize. The Catholic Church teaches that, in cases of emergency, only intent matters: even someone who has not themselves been baptized may confer the sacrament if their intent is the same as what a priest would have intended.
4. If a Baptism is valid but not fruitful, it has left an indelible mark, but at this point no sanctifying grace is being received by that person.

Answer: True

If the sacrament is valid, an indelible mark is always left on the person's soul. However, if there is an obstacle to its efficacy (a lack of complete acceptance of the cleansing grace), then its effect is not yet fully received.
5. The anointing with Sacred Chrism in Baptism is a reminder that we are consecrated as priests, prophets, and slaves.

Answer: False

This one is definitely false. We are NOT consecrated as slaves. We are consecrated as priests, prophets, and kings.
6. A sacrament is an invisible sign that brings us visible grace.

Answer: False

A sacrament is a visible sign that brings us invisible grace, you obviously can't see grace. Another definitions used is a visible sign instituted by Christ to give us grace.
7. Which Gift of the Holy Spirit gives us a deeper appreciation of other persons, and of the mysteries of our Faith?

Answer: Understanding

These four seem similar at first, but they each have a different meaning. Wisdom helps us see the "whole picture" and look toward what ultimately matters in life. Prudence leads us to use sound judgment in the decisions we make. Knowledge aids us in our quest for the truth.
8. We all know that a virtue is a good thing, but what do you call the opposite of a virtue?

Answer: vice

In the freshman religion class I'm in, we gave a three-part definition to a virtue: a habit, a middle way between two extremes, and it's found in a virtuous person. So I guess a vice also be a habit. It would probably be an extreme and it would be found in a vicious person.
9. Only a bishop can be a celebrant for Confirmation.

Answer: False

A priest can also be celebrant under certain circumstances if given permission by a bishop, but usually a bishop is.
10. Many Lutherans believe in the Real Presence, but not in the same way that Catholics do.

Answer: True

Both Lutherans and Catholics believe that Christ's presence is in the Eucharist after it is consecrated. However, Catholics believe in transubstantiation and Lutherans believe in consubstantiation. The difference is that in trans., the belief is that the bread and wine change completely into the Body and Blood.

In cons., the belief is that it is both bread and the Body, and wine and the Blood.
11. In which part of the Mass (right after the greeting) do the priest and congregation turn to Jesus to ask for mercy?

Answer: Penitential Rite

After the Penitential Rite comes the Gloria, and then the Collect. Later on are the General Intercessions, Offertory, Preface, Eucharistic Prayer, and Communion.
12. When talking about Transubstantiation and Consubstantiation, two words involving philosophy come into play. One is substance, any individual thing, and the other is a term used to describe any quality or property or attribute that is found in a substance. What is this term?

Answer: accident

In transubstantiation, the substance (bread and wine) change to the Body and Blood, while the accidents stay the same.
13. In the case of an emergency, a lay person may be the celebrant of Anointing of the Sick, and it will still be valid.

Answer: False

In Anointing of the Sick, only a priest may be the celebrant.
14. Which name for Anointing of the Sick is used to suggest it's done in the very last moments of the person's life?

Answer: Extreme Unction

Extreme Unction is used to suggest they're seriously ill, but may yet recover. Last Rites is used when it includes Confession and Communion given to a person on his/her deathbed. So they both are used when death is near or possibly near, but one also refers to the Last Rites you receive.
15. In Confession, mortal sins must be confessed according to what?

Answer: kind and number

You have to tell the priest what kind of mortal sin it was (stealing, adultery, ect.) and how many times you did it. Otherwise the priest will have to ask you, so it's much easier to just say it right away.
