Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Joseph's father?

Answer: Jacob

Joseph was the son of Jacob and Rachel. Rachel was Jacob's second and favorite wife.
2. What did Joseph's brothers plan to do with him when he came to join them in the fields?

Answer: Kill him

Initially they wanted to kill him. They were only afterwards convinced to sell him.
3. Who talked Joseph's brothers out of their plan to kill him?

Answer: Reuben

Genesis 37:21-22 "When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. 'Let's not take his life,' he said. 'Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him.' Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father."
4. Who was Joseph sold to?

Answer: Midianites

Instead of killing him directly, his brothers sold him to the Midianites (also known as the Ishmaelites) for 20 shekels of silver. They then made it look as though he was killed by an animal, so that their father would not know.
5. When he was finally brought to Egypt, Joseph became the leader of Potiphar's what?

Answer: household

Potiphar was so impressed with Joseph, he made Joseph his attendant to manage all of his possessions.
6. Joseph slept with Potiphar's wife.

Answer: False

He refused her, but she managed to grab him by his cloak as he ran off. She then used this cloak to frame Joseph.
7. When Joseph was in prison, the warden liked what he saw and allowed Joseph to manage the prison.

Answer: True

The warden didn't even track what Joseph was doing since he so trusted Joseph.
8. How did Joseph come into favour with the Pharaoh?

Answer: He interpreted dreams.

Several of Pharaoh's servants were in the same jail and had dreams that they did not understand. Joseph was able to interpret these dreams. One servant (the cupbearer) lived to tell the Pharaoh of how this prisoner would be able to help interpret the Pharaoh's dream (although it took TWO years!).
9. What did Joseph predict would happen to Egypt?

Answer: Seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine

Joseph interpreted the Pharaoh's dream and saw seven prosperous years, followed by seven years of very harsh famine, erasing all evidence of the seven years of abundance.
10. Joseph then became the Pharaoh's second-in-command, in charge of all of Egypt. How old was he?

Answer: 30

He was thirty years old when he took over all operations of Egypt. He spent the seven years of abundance stockpiling as much as possible to help Egypt get through the seven years of famine.
11. Joseph's success spread across the land. His father and brothers caught wind of his new life and ran to join him.

Answer: False

Joseph's brothers had only heard that there was grain in Egypt, and even when they went to buy some, they did not recognize their brother.
12. What did Joseph secretly give his brothers when they left with the grain they had bought to take back home?

Answer: their money back

When his brothers stopped to feed their donkeys, they opened their sacks to find that all their silver was there. But they still did not know that they had just spoken with their brother.
13. His brothers came back, and Joseph eventually told them the truth. What did the Pharaoh do when he found out?

Answer: He sent them out with chariots to get their families and come back.

Pharaoh was very receptive to them, offering them land in Egypt so that they could come and be with Joseph.
14. What did Joseph tell his family that their occupations should be when the Pharaoh asked them?

Answer: shepherds

He told them to be shepherds, so that they would get the finest land in Egypt to live, and so that they would be left alone (since Egyptians detested shepherds).
15. How did Joseph die?

Answer: The Bible does not say

Joseph lived a long life. He died at the old age of 110.
