Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jacob, the father of twelve sons and a daughter, had wives as well as concubines. Which woman was the mother of his beloved son Joseph?

Answer: Rachel

Jacob worked for seven years for Laban to marry his beautiful daughter, Rachel. At the end of that time, he was permitted to marry Leah, the eldest daughter. Jacob was so in love with Rachel that he worked for seven more years to marry her, and she was his favorite wife. Zilpah and Bilhah were his concubines. Genesis 35:23.
2. Which of the following men was NOT a son of Leah?

Answer: Benjamin

Benjamin was the only other child of Rachel. She died in giving birth to him, and thus Jacob favored him and Joseph above his ten other sons. Genesis 35:18.
3. Joseph told his family about his dreams, which turned out to be visions from the Lord. What were the topics of these dreams?

Answer: Bowing stars and sheaves

Joseph was young when he began to receive messages from God. The dreams, interpreted, were about Joseph's family bowing to him when he became vizier of Egypt. Genesis 37:5.
4. How old was Joseph when he was sold to be a slave?

Answer: 17

Genesis 37:2 states that Joseph was seventeen, and later verses state that his brothers got the idea to kill him. They then amended the idea, and sold him to the Ishmaelites.
5. Which brother did not want any of Joseph's blood shed?

Answer: Reuben

Genesis 37:21 makes it clear that Reuben wanted Joseph gone, but not killed. And the brothers stripped off his robe and threw him into a pit.
6. Potiphar was the man who bought Joseph to be a slave. Joseph, with the help of God, grew to be a respected figure in Potiphar's household - so respected, in fact, that only one thing was off-limits to him and landed him in jail. What was that thing?

Answer: Potiphar's wife

The story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife is a well-known one. A beautiful and powerful woman wants to sleep with the one young man who's unavailable to her. The theme occurs in the play 'Hippolytus', as well as many other times in ancient writings. In Joseph's case, trouble ensued as Potiphar's wife accused him of trying to rape her. Genesis 39:9.
7. Who put Joseph in charge of all that was in the prison?

Answer: the warden

Genesis 39:20-22...'But while Joseph was there in the prison, the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.'
8. The Pharaoh's baker was thrown into jail, and told Joseph about his dream. In it, birds ate food from baskets atop the baker's head. How did Joseph interpret this dream?

Answer: That the baker was going to be killed

Joseph was right, too, of course. The baker was hanged within three days. The cupbearer, whose dream Joseph also interpreted correctly, was returned to the palace. Genesis 40:18.
9. Joseph was summoned from jail to interpret the dreams of the King of Egypt. Whose idea was it that Joseph do this?

Answer: The cupbearer

Two years after the cupbearer was released from prison, Pharaoh began to have disturbing nightmares and no one could tell him what they meant. The cupbearer was reminded of the boy in prison who had accurately explained his dreams, so he suggested to the king that the 'young Hebrew' be called to interpret. Genesis 41:9.
10. Of course, Joseph had no trouble at all explaining Pharaoh's two dreams: one about cows and one about corn. Now, what did the dreams mean?

Answer: There would be seven years of plenty, then seven of famine

When Pharaoh saw that Joseph was wise, he immediately put him in charge of all of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. Genesis 41:39-41.
11. Pharaoh gave Joseph a host of new things: a wife, fine robes, a chariot, and jewellery...and a new name. What was this name?

Answer: Zaphenath-Paaneah

Pharaoh liked Joseph all right, but most self-respecting Egyptians would never serve a Hebrew shepherd-turned slave-turned vizier. So, he gave Joseph an Egyptian name (thought to mean 'savior'). Genesis 41:45.
12. What were the names of Joseph's sons by his wife Asenath?

Answer: Ephraim and Manasseh

Manasseh's name means 'forget' and Ephraim's means 'twice fruitful'. Joseph was blessed with two sons. Genesis 41:51-52.
13. When his brothers came to Egypt to buy grain, they did not recognize their brother. But they shared that they were the sons of Jacob and only the youngest of them, Benjamin, was home with their old father. Joseph accused them of being spies, and sent them home to bring to him the eleventh brother they claimed to have. What did Joseph do in the meantime?

Answer: He kept Simeon as insurance for the brothers' return

Genesis 42:24. Not only did Joseph give them provisions for their trip, but he craftily returned the silver with which they paid for the grain. There is no account of him treating Simeon poorly; in fact, some writers assume that he was given all the luxuries that Joseph was privy to.
14. When his brothers were leaving for the second time, Joseph wanted to see if they'd changed at all since they sold him into slavery. So he slipped something into Benjamin's sack and accused the boy of theft. Each brother offered to lay down his life to prove Benjamin's innocence. What did Joseph accuse his brother of stealing?

Answer: A silver cup

Joseph was happy to see that his brothers HAD changed and so he revealed himself to them. THEY were happy to see that their brother was alive, and in such good health! Jacob was finally able to see his favorite son (and his grandsons) before his death.
15. The story of Joseph is a beautiful and inspirational one. It has been made into countless movies and novels, and one very famous musical, 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'. Who wrote this show?

Answer: Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice

'Joseph' hit the stage in the late sixties. Soon, 'Jesus Christ Superstar' followed. Wonder when 'Goliath: The Musical' will be written!
