Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nehemiah was a layman, and he was a cupbearer in the King of Persia's court.

Answer: True

Nehemiah was the son of Hachaliah and the brother of Hanani. He was chosen as the king's cupbearer because he was trustworthy and confident. Besides refilling the king's plate and cup, the cupbearer also had the job of tasting the food and drink that was served to the king.
2. When Nehemiah was told the truth about the walls of Jerusalem being torn down, how did he react? (Nehemiah 1:4 KJV)

Answer: He wept

Over the news that the walls of Jerusalem had been torn down, Nehemiah wept, mourned, fasted, and prayed to God. His prayer can be found in Nehemiah 1:5-11 (KJV).
3. Did Artaxerxes give Nehemiah permission to travel to Jerusalem after he learned of the destruction of the walls? (Nehemiah 2, KJV)

Answer: Yes

Not only did Artaxerxes give Nehemiah permission to go but he granted him men to travel along with him and a permission slip to take as much wood from the forest as needed to help rebuild the walls and gates of Jerusalem.
4. Nehemiah 3 talks about the repairing of the walls and the gates in Jerusalem. How many gates on the walls were repaired?

Answer: Ten

One such wall was twenty-three feet deep and at least eighty feet long. A wall with that thickness and length would be known as a broad wall.

The gates connected to the walls of Jerusalem were the sheep gate, the fish gate, the old gate, the valley gate, the dung gate, the fountain gate, the water gate, the horse gate, the east gate, and the gate of Miphkad.

The gate of Miphkad was the gate where the elders sat in judgment of people.
5. Why did Nehemiah and the other Israelites working on the walls have to protect themselves with weapons? (Nehemiah 4, KJV)

Answer: They were targeted for death

An official of Samaria named Sanballat, who was against the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, targeted Nehemiah and the Israelites for death. Nehemiah learned of a plan to mix in soldiers with the Israelites so they could be easily killed. He had every man arm themselves while they continued to work and then he would have half of them stand guard while the other worked.
6. When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem, what position did he take in the city? (Nehemiah 5:14, KJV)

Answer: Governor

Nehemiah was the provincial governor of Judah from 444 to 432 B.C. When he saw the state of hunger the people were in, Nehemiah went to the other rulers and told them to stop taxing the citizens so they would be able to buy food.
7. Nehemiah was targeted for death even before the walls of Jerusalem were finished. (Nehemiah 6, KJV)

Answer: True

Sanballat wanted to kill Nehemiah after getting word that he was telling people that he was the king. When the wall and gates in Jerusalem were completed in August 443 B.C. after 52 days of construction, Sanballat lost his nerve to go after Nehemiah.
8. The Israelites listened to the prophet Ezra read from the Book of the Law of Moses and then they celebrated what festival? (Nehemiah 8, KJV)

Answer: Tabernacles (Booths)

Ezra read the first five books of Bible -- the Pentateuch -- from a high perch while Nehemiah and the others listened. He read from dawn until noon and then he declared it was time for the festival. The festival was held in front of the water gate, not inside the city.

The Festival of Tabernacles (Booths) started on the fifteenth day of the seventh month and lasted seven days. It was to remember those who walked a long time in the desert.
9. Nehemiah left Jerusalem after the rebuilding and then returned some time later to handle some problems that had arisen. While praying to God in Nehemiah 13, he asked God to remember him. What was the last thing he asked God to remember? (Nehemiah 13:31, KJV)

Answer: Remember me for good

After the temple had been rebuilt, Nehemiah returned to Persia to continue in the king's court. When he heard of some bad things that had been happening in Jerusalem, Nehemiah requested to return and his request was granted. When he arrived, Nehemiah kicked anyone out of the temple that was living there and returned them to the service of God.

He brought the Levites back to the city and he made everyone stop working on the Sabbath day. While Nehemiah was returning order to Jerusalem, he was asking God to remember him for the different things he was doing.

The last sentence in the book of Nehemiah was 13:31. In the verse, Nehemiah asked God to remember him for good.
10. Did Nehemiah resent the Israelites marrying foreign men and women? (Nehemiah 13:25, KJV)

Answer: Yes

Nehemiah cursed and attacked the Israelites that were thinking about wanting to marry foreigners. He went so far as to chase an Israelite male who had married outside his people.
