Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which religion's adherents were originally known primarily as "followers of the way"?

Answer: Christianity

According to the New Testament, the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians" at Antioch. It is quite possible that the term "Christian" was intended sarcastically, but it eventually came to be adopted by followers of Christ themselves.
2. Which word in the title of a Daoist scripture literally means "way"?

Answer: Tao

In The Tao Te Ching (or Dao De Jing), tao (dao) means "way," (and is usually extrapolated to "the way") and te (de) means "virtue." Ching (jing) means "classic."
3. What religious figure said, "I am the way, come to me"?

Answer: Krishna

In the Hindu epic the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna goes on to say, "Neither the multitude of gods, nor great sages know my origin, for I am the source of all the gods and great sages."
4. The Tao Te Ching says the way is like what object, "used, but never used up"?

Answer: A well

Daoist scripture goes on to say, "It is like the eternal void: / filled with infinite possibilities. / It is hidden but always present...It is older than God."
5. Which Jewish term literally means "the way to walk"?

Answer: Halakah

Halakah refers to all of Jewish law, including biblical law, Talmudic law, and rabbinical law. A "mitzvah" is one of the 613 biblical commands. The Mishna, which comes from a word meaning repetition, refers to a written, edited collection of the oral law.

The Talmud, which has its root in a word meaning "teach" or "study", catalogues the discussions of the rabbis on issues of Jewish law.
6. In Genesis, whom does God choose so that he will direct his descendants "to keep the way"?

Answer: Abraham

"Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him" (Genesis 18:18-19).
7. What scripture includes the words, "In the beginning was the Way"?

Answer: The Tao Te Ching

The Tao Te Ching says, "In the beginning was the Way. All things issue from it; all things return to it." The Gospel of John (KJV) begins, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made." Genesis starts, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
8. In the Gospel of Matthew (King James Version), Jesus said "the way" is what?

Answer: Narrow

"Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:14).
9. According to the Tao Te Ching, it is the way of heaven to conquer without competing, and to answer without what?

Answer: Speaking

The Tao continues, "To attract without summoning,/ To get results without hastening."
10. Who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me"?

Answer: Jesus

Jesus is quoted as making this claim in John 14:6. Jesus, like Krishna, often used the descriptor "I Am," which some Jews may have regarded as a claim to divinity because "I Am" is the name by which God identified himself to Moses.
