Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After Judas betrayed Jesus he killed himself. How many men were considered for replacing him as one of the twelve?

Answer: 2

The remaining disciples decided that the man who replaced Judas needed to have been following Jesus since the time he was baptized by John. They nominated two men, Joseph and Matthias. Then they prayed and asked God to show them which one he wanted to replace Judas with. They cast lots and Matthias was chosen as Judas' replacement. This can be found in Acts 1:21-26.

2. According to John's Gospel, what Apostle scornfully exclaimed when first hearing of Jesus: "Can there any good come out of Nazareth?"

Answer: Nathanael

Soon after, when Christ and Nathanael first met, they immediately hit it off. Jesus tells him that he is an "Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Jesus goes on to tell Nathanael that he had seen him standing under the fig tree. Nathanael then says to Christ: "Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel." (John 1:47-49 KJV Bible)

Nathanael is called Bartholomew in the other three Gospels.

3. I was one of Jesus' original disciples. It has been suggested that I may have been a short person; or as a man that was somehow "less important" than someone else; or was a cousin of Jesus. I have also been called a just man; the son of Mary; and the son of Alphaeus; the half-brother of Jesus; a younger man than another person who went by the same name as I did; and as a righteous man. Do you know who I am?

Answer: James (the Lesser)

Yes, I, James the Lesser, was one of the twelve disciples. As for all the rest of that, it just can't all possibly be true. But some of it is. You'll just have to figure out for yourself which parts you choose to believe about me. It all depends on which religious group you happen to belong to, and whether you subscribe to the "established" legends about me or if you follow later teachings and beliefs concerning my life.

I may have also been the head of the early church at Jerusalem.
Furthermore, I may have died by being thrown off a pinnacle of the Temple at Jerusalem, or I may have been beaten to death with mallets and stones, or maybe both or, maybe not...

Traditions, both in the early church at Jerusalem, and later within the Catholic church have both been in conflict with each other for centuries, as to who I actually was. Not only that, more modern teachings about me, vary even more greatly. All of the attributes listed have been assigned to me, and more.

One belief as to why I was called "the Lesser", was to distinguish me from James the Greater, John's brother. These were the sons of Zebedee. Another point of view is that I was perhaps younger than James the Greater, or that I was smaller in stature. No one is really sure, however, if I was one of Jesus' brothers, one of his cousins or otherwise related to Him, although several excellent arguments have been postulated. Some people even believe that I am another James entirely, and the disagreements go on, even concerning my manner of death. Some believe me to have been martyred, while others find no evidence of such.

Some Biblical references to this particular James may be found in Mark 15:40
Matthew 27:56, Mark 16:1, and in Luke 24:10. (Year 1611 - King James Version)

4. Which of the disciples, also known for his skepticism, demonstrated outstanding loyalty to Jesus in John 11:16?

Answer: Thomas

In the story of how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, we read in John 11:8 that when Jesus expressed his intention to return to Judea, the disciples were horrified. In paraphrase they said, "Teacher - they were about to stone you when we left just now!" However, when it became obvious that Jesus was determined to go back to Jerusalem (or at least to Bethany), it was Thomas who said, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." (John 11:16, KJV)

5. According to the gospel of John in the KJV, as Jesus put a towel around his waist which disciple said: "Lord, dost thou wash my feet?" Jesus answered: "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter."

Answer: Simon Peter

"Peter then declared 'Thou shalt never wash my feet.' Jesus answered him 'If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.' Simon Peter saith unto him 'Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.' Jesus saith to him, 'He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.'" - John 13:6-10 KJV Bible.

People believe that when Jesus washed the disciples' feet, he was humbly showing that he came to serve, not to be served.

6. In John 12:20-22, we read that Andrew, along with Philip, introduced some Gentiles to Jesus. What nationality were these Gentiles?

Answer: Greeks

The nationality of the Gentiles was Greek. According to Scripture, the delegation went to Philip first to arrange a meeting with Jesus. Philip is a Greek name and some theologians believe he may have been able to speak the language. Philip in turn got help from Andrew, perhaps because he knew Andrew was warm and friendly and would do his part to make the Greeks feel at home. This suggests that, as a result of Andrew leading the Greeks to Jesus, he earned himself a reputation as the first foreign missionary.

7. Who, with Peter, according to gospel of Luke (KJV), went up to a mountain to pray with Jesus and while there saw Jesus in all his glory along with Elijah and Moses?

Answer: John and James

And while they were on the mountain Peter said unto Jesus "Master it is good for us to be here and let us make three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He said this because the three of them were very afraid. Then, a cloud covered them and a voice from the cloud said "This is my beloved son hear him" and then, when the cloud had passed, Jesus was found alone with them. The whole transfiguration can be found in Luke 9:28-36.

8. According to John's Gospel, of the twelve disciples, who was the treasurer?

Answer: Judas

John 12:4-6, KJV

"Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 'Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?' This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein."

John 13:29, KJV

"For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor."

It's ironic that the disciple who was in charge of the money went on to betray Christ for money.

9. In the book of Luke, Jesus saw a publican named Levi and said: "Follow me." So Levi left all that he was doing, rose up and followed him. What happened after this?

Answer: Levi made him a great feast in his own house

While at the feast, the scribes and Pharisees objected to who Jesus was eating with and complained. Jesus answered them saying "They that are whole need not a physician but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." Publicans in the KJV are now what we call tax collectors, not managers of public houses.

Levi was a different name used for Matthew, one of Jesus' twelve disciples. This can be found in Luke 5:27-32.

Question by aclb
10. What was the name of Andrew's father?

Answer: Jonah

For this info, we have to go to Matthew 16:13-20 where Jesus asked his disciples who they think he is. Peter replied with "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.". Jesus then said "Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.". Simon Barjona means Simon son of Jonah so we know that Peter was the son of Jonah(not to be confused with the Jonah who was swallowed by a great fish in the old testament). We know that Peter was the brother of Andrew so Andrew's father was Jonah.
