Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is thought to have been the first and possibly the oldest apostle?

Answer: Andrew

Andrew was the first apostle chosen by Christ and is also thought to have been the eldest. He was approximately 33 years old when he became an apostle and his great skill at administration made him one of the most respected of the apostles. His role was in the background where he provided support for the other apostles and their works.

He was a humble man and is often overlooked because his skills at oratory may not have been as good as some of the other apostles.
2. What is the name of the apostle that replaced Judas?

Answer: Matthias

Many people are unaware of Matthias as an apostle. He was chosen by the other apostles as the replacement for Judas Iscariot after his betrayal. He is the only apostle that was not personally chosen by Christ, as he had already died. He is believed to have spread the word along the coast of the Caspian Sea. He is believed to have been stoned to death in Aethiopia, near the upper Nile.
3. According to Matthew 27:3-10, how did the apostle Judas die?

Answer: Hanged himself

Like many things in the Bible, there is more than one version as to the death of Judas. The most commonly heard/read is that he returns the money he was paid for his treachery and then committed suicide by hanging himself. The money was used to buy the original "potter's field" where he was subsequently interred. Although there are other versions, none of them match the other answers.
4. Who was responsible for the death of the apostle James?

Answer: Herod Agrippa

According to Acts 12:1-2, King Herod had the apostle James put to death with a sword. James was the first apostle to die for Christ and was part of his inner circle. His martyrdom is the only one that is directly reported in the pages of the New Testament.
5. Of the options listed, which two apostles were brothers?

Answer: James and John

James and John were both the sons of Zebedee. This can be found in Mark 1:19. They were not the only apostles that were brothers. In Mark 1:16 it states that Simon Peter and Andrew were brothers also. All four of these apostles were fishermen before they became the disciples of Christ.
6. Which apostle was originally a tax collector?

Answer: Matthew

According to Matthew 10:3, before becoming an apostle Matthew was a tax collector. Some Biblical scholars debate whether the apostle Matthew was also known as Levi, a tax collector mentioned in other books of the Bible (Mark 2:14 and Luke 5:27). It is thought that Matthew may have been the most educated of the Apostles and possible spoke and read Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic.
7. The apostle Bartholomew is often depicted as being skinned alive.

Answer: True

The apostle Bartholomew is often credited with spreading the word of Christ through India and Armenia. He is thought to have died in Armenia and he is often said to have been skinned alive before being beheaded. He is often shown in works of art holding a large knife in one hand and a large piece of his skin in the other.
8. According to Acts 20:9-12, which apostle raised a young man named Eutychus from the dead?

Answer: Paul

During a sermon by the apostle Paul a young man named Eutychus is said to have fallen asleep, fallen from a window and died. The apostle Paul is recorded as raising him from the dead. He has been credited with writing fourteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament. Of course, this fact is a matter of scholarly debate.
9. Which apostle cured a crippled beggar at the temple?

Answer: Peter

Acts 3:1 to 4:31 tells the story of a visit to temple made by the apostles John and Peter. They come upon a crippled man who has never been able to walk and is taken daily to the temple to beg for money. Peter tells him he has no money to give but then commands him, in the name of Christ, to stand and walk. It is one of the most famous miracles by the apostles.
10. Which apostle is sometimes referred to as "The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved"?

Answer: John

The term "The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved" is a reference to the apostle John, the brother of James. Until recently, he was credited with being the author of five books of the Bible, including Revelations. Biblical scholars now believe that this may not be the case. John is believed to have outlived the other apostles and is believed to have been the only one that did not die a martyr's death.

He is thought to have been the youngest of the apostles, and is thought to have lived well into old age.
