Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joseph's dreams of supremacy over his family garnered him a rebuke from his father, and utter hatred from his brothers. Jacob later sent Joseph to find his brothers, who were tending the family flocks. Where did Joseph eventually find them -- a place where they captured him, and eventually sold him to a passing caravan as a slave?

Answer: Do'than

Genesis 37:16,17 says- "And he (Joseph) said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks? And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Do'than. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Do'than."
2. After Abram and Lot came out of Egypt, a dispute arose between their shepherds because the same grazing ground wouldn't support them both. As they amicably decided to part, Abram gave Lot the first choice of where to go. In which direction did Lot depart?

Answer: East

Genesis 13:11 says, "Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other." This action was the beginning of Lot's downward spiral. He first saw the plain of Jordan was the superior grazing ground, as Genesis 13:10 says ("And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere...") and did not cede it to Abram, his elder.

Then, after learning of the wickedness of the Sodomites, he kept his family there instead of separating himself.

The wickedness permeated his own family, and his own wife looked back during the cities' destruction and was turned into a pillar of salt. His daughters feared all the men were killed, got their father drunk with wine, and committed incest while he was in his drunken state.
3. Before Joseph died, he asked the children of Israel to do something for him. What was that promise?

Answer: Take his bones out of Egypt

Genesis 50:25: "And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence." Joseph knew someday the Lord would lead his people into the land promised to Abraham, and wanted to be buried in that land.
4. How long did God give Noah to gather all the animals into the ark?

Answer: 7 days

Genesis 7:4 says, "For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth." In Genesis 7:1-3, God gave Noah instructions to get his family into the Ark, as well as directions for the quantity of clean and unclean animals.
5. Aside from God's omniscience, how did He know that Cain killed Abel?

Answer: Abel's blood cried out to God

Genesis 4:10: "And He (God) said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground."
6. In Genesis chapter 18, God again visited Abraham and Sarah. For the third time, he told Abraham they would have a child of their own in their old age. What was Sarah's response to the good news?

Answer: She laughed inwardly

God had promised the couple their own child, though they were both beyond child-bearing age, in Genesis verses 13:15,15:4, and 17:19. In Genesis 18:12, Sarah laughed to herself, not aloud. In the following verse, God asked Abraham: "Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?" Only God himself is omniscient, thus we can argue that the person referred to was God and not just an ordinary visitor given great respect in Abraham's tent.
7. How many children did Leah bear Jacob without the help of her handmaiden Zilpah?

Answer: 7

Genesis 35:23 states, "The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Is'sa-char, and Zebulun." There were six sons born of Leah, plus her daughter Dinah, which made seven in total.
8. What was the nationality of the tribesmen that purchased Joseph from his brothers?

Answer: Ish'me-el-ites

Genesis 37:28 states, "Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ish'me-el-ites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt."
9. After spending several years in prison, Joseph was not fit to stand before Pharaoh. Besides a change of clothes, what bit of hygiene did Joseph engage in?

Answer: Shaved himself

Genesis 41:14 said that Joseph shaved himself. This most likely meant his entire head, as many ancient hieroglyphs show male and female figures with no hair on their head whatsoever.
10. Due to the famine described in Genesis chapter 12, Abram had to leave Canaan. What country did he take his family to?

Answer: Egypt

Genesis 12:10 said "the famine was grievous in the land." This was where Abram started the willful deception of telling people that Sarai was his sister for fear of being killed. This behavior of deception (Isaac did the same as his father in Genesis 26:7, Jacob and Rebecca deceived Isaac into giving Jacob his brother's blessing, and Laban tricked Jacob into marrying Leah) was prevalent from generation to generation with stranger and family alike. I've always found it odd that a man of such faith didn't believe that the God he so dutifully obeyed would not protect him.
