Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jacob and Esau were reunited after a twenty-year separation. Esau came with four hundred men to meet with Jacob. What was the result of this meeting?

Answer: Esau embraced Jacob and showed him hospitality.

Genesis 33:4 says, "And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept." The years apart had cooled the harsh feelings Esau once felt for Jacob. Jacob had to walk in faith to get to this point, as he was not sure of the outcome.
2. In Genesis Chapter 1, on what day of creation did God populate the seas and the winged fowl?

Answer: 5th

Genesis 1:22,23 recorded "And God blessed them, saying, be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
3. After Noah emptied the ark, what was his first action?

Answer: He built an altar.

In Genesis 8:18-19, both man and beast left the ark. Genesis 8:20 reports, "And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar."
4. In Genesis Chapter 45, Joseph finally revealed his identity to his brothers. He instructed them to return with Jacob and their families and settle in Egypt during the famine. Where in Egypt did they settle?

Answer: Goshen

Joseph was satisfied his brothers had changed their ways and wanted to protect his family during the years of famine. In Genesis 45:10, his instructions were: "And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shall be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast." There were still five more years of famine, so Joseph wanted to be sure all his family was cared for.
5. Rachel became envious of Leah because she gave Jacob four sons. Since God had not yet opened her womb, whom did she offer to Jacob as a concubine to bear children in her stead?

Answer: Bilhah

In Genesis 30:3, Rachel gave Bilhah to her husband. The manner in which Bilhah bore the child ("and she shall bear upon my knees") can be seen as a form of adoption, where Bilhah was the surrogate mother for Rachel.
6. Abraham bought a parcel of land from Ephron to bury Sarah and to be a burial plot for his line. What was the purchase price for the land and the adjacent field?

Answer: 400 shekels of silver

In Genesis 23:16-20, the amount "400 shekels of silver" was recorded as well as the motive. As Abraham was esteemed by the sons of Heth (most likely the Hittites), and they were willing to give him whatever he chose, Abraham wanted to make a binding contract with them in case their relationship should someday change.
7. In Genesis Chapter 12, God moved Abram from the land of Ur to a place He promised to Abram and his descendants. Why then did Abram move his family to Egypt, despite God's generous gift?

Answer: Famine

Abram and his family temporarily relocated in Egypt due to the great famine. He left Egypt with more than he came with, as would his descendants in the Exodus.
8. In Genesis Chapter 17, God sealed his covenant with Abraham. The sign of Noah's covenant with God was the rainbow. What was the sign of Abraham's covenant with God?

Answer: Circumcision

Genesis 17:10 says, "This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised." God is serious about His promises and expected Abraham to be as well. Moses almost lost his life for failing to circumcise his sons. Had Zipporah not intervened on his behalf in Exodus Chapter 4, Moses never would have led God's people out of Egypt.
9. Who first convinced his brothers not to kill Joseph, in the hope of returning him to Jacob?

Answer: Reuben

Though Judah later intervened and convinced his brothers to sell Joseph instead of killing him, it was Reuben who initially stopped them in Genesis 37:21,22.
10. Jacob met his match when it came to trickery and deception when he dealt with his uncle Laban. After serving Laban for seven years for the hand of Rachel, how was Jacob compensated for his labors?

Answer: He was tricked into marrying Leah.

It seemed to have been a family trait to deal treacherously with family members. Jacob and Rebekah, Laban's sister, deceived Isaac into giving Jacob his brother's blessing seven years earlier. Laban's weak excuse for misleading Jacob was that it was custom for the older daughter to be married first, something he failed to mention some seven years earlier.
