Answer: Blood

Cutaneous anthrax affects the skin. Inhalation or pulmonary anthrax affects the lungs. Gastrointestinal anthrax infects the GI tract. Inhalation and gastrointestinal anthrax are often fatal, but cutaneous anthrax usually is not.

Answer: Bacillus anthracis

Bacillus anthracis spores are present in soil, animal hair, wool, hides, and products made from them.
3. What is the incubation period for anthrax?

Answer: A few hours to 7 days

Most often, cases occur withing 48 hours of exposure. Transmission from person to person is very rare.
4. Is there a vaccine for anthrax?

Answer: Yes

There is one avaiable, but it is only given to certain people: Those who work directly with the organism in the laboratory; people who work with imported animal hides or furs in areas where standards are insufficient to prevent exposure to anthrax spores; those who handle potentially infected animal products in high-incidence areas; and to military personnel deployed to areas with high risk for exposure to the organism.
5. What is not a typical treatment for anthrax?

Answer: Inhalation

Skin infections are treated with penicllin injections or oral tetracycline or erythromycin. Lung infections require IV penicillin.
