Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which, out of the five most common anxiety disorders, is the most frequently diagnosed in the US?

Answer: generalized anxiety disorder

The five major types of anxiety disorders are: GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), social phobia, and panic disorder.
2. What is the main difference between a generalized anxiety disorder and a panic disorder?

Answer: A panic disorder causes random, unrelated panic attacks.

A panic disorder is classified by frequent, random and unrelated panic attacks or "nervous episodes".
3. Who do anxiety disorders most commonly afflict?

Answer: Adolescents

Although anxiety disorders most commonly begin in adolescence and carry on throughout one's life, they can afflict anyone at anytime.
4. What are the three most common symptoms of a panic attack?

Answer: Shortness of breath, dizziness, and a feeling of terror.

Although these are the three most common symptoms, there are many more that can accompany a panic attack. Here are some of the more common ones: shaking, sweating, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet. There may also be chest pains, a feeling of a "lump" in the throat, stomach pains, nausea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Emotionally, one may feel detached, and helpless, or experience a sense of "unreality", as well as worry that they may be dying, or going crazy.
5. What is a common symptom of generalized anxiety disorder?

Answer: Incessant, constant worry about something unimportant

Extreme paranoia is usually a sign of schizophrenia and feeling hopeless one of depression.
6. What is the most common medication for temporary relief of panic attacks?

Answer: lorazepam

Although all of the above may be used to treat panic attacks, lorazepam is the most commonly prescribed. Diazepam and flurazepam are much stronger, and used only in high-tension scenarios. Lithium carbonate is most often used in people who have manic-depressive disorder.
7. You recognise the signs of the onset of a panic attack when you are shopping. Which of these may help reduce the symptoms?

Answer: Taking slow, deep breaths.

There are many ways to calm yourself if you are panicking. However, you must understand that while you cannot stop all panic attacks, you can lower the symptoms, as they usually only last for a maximum of twenty minutes. Repeated panic attacks may indicate a panic disorder which needs medical intervention.
8. At what point would one be usually diagnosed with a panic disorder?

Answer: After numerous, disabling panic attacks

Almost everyone suffers at least one panic attack in their lifetime. However, if they become frequent or interrupt your daily activities, one should seek a professional opinion.
9. What is the best way to deal with someone having a panic attack?

Answer: Reassure them, and take them where they feel safe.

The number one worst thing you can do is tell someone who is panicking to relax. Remember, the panic attack is an unwanted and sudden feeling of terror; the person can't do anything about it. And never say "It's all in your head," they know that, but they can't stop it.
10. When is a person considered "cured"?

Answer: Never. It can be controlled, never cured.

Don't worry though. Although panic and anxiety disorders can never be fully "cured" they can be controlled to the point where one will rarely, if ever, suffer a panic attack, and will be able to live a long, happy and basically worry-free life.
