Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Schizophrenia is a disease that often strikes young people in their prime.

Answer: True

For men the age of onset for schizophrenia is often ages 16 to 20 and for women, the age of onset is sometimes a little later -- ages 20 to 30.
2. Schizophrenia always runs in families.

Answer: False

Schizophrenia does appear more regularly in some families but many people with schizophrenia have no family history of the illness.
3. Schizophrenia remains a very mysterious illness and is not highly treatable.

Answer: False

Schizophrenia can almost always be successfully treated with appropriate medication and emotional support.
4. Another term for schizophrenia is split personality.

Answer: False

Schizophrenia has nothing to do with having a split personality. This is an absolute old-wives tale.
5. Schizophrenia affects 1 in 100 people worldwide in the early twenty-first century.

Answer: True

The illness is a lot more common than one might think.
6. The causes of schizophrenia are well known in the early twenty-first century.

Answer: False

Schizophrenia is a brain illness, but there are many potential causes, including the use of cannabis and birth complications. There may be a genetic predisposition, with the illness being triggered by stress.
7. Thought disorder is the most profound change seen in a person with schizophrenia.

Answer: True

Thought disorder prevents clear thinking and rational response. Thoughts may be slow to form, or come extra fast, or not at all. The person may jump from topic to topic, seem confused, or have difficulty making simple decisions. Thinking may be coloured by delusions -- false beliefs that have no logical basis.
8. People diagnosed with schizophrenia will almost always end up being confined to an institution for the insane.

Answer: False

Nothing could be further from the truth. With the discovery of the newer atypical anti-psychotic medications used in conjunction with psychotherapy and family support, the future is quite positive for people with schizophrenia. Once in successful treatment they can and will go on to lead normal lives.
9. Schizophrenia is easy to diagnose, especially if the patient is presenting with visual and auditory hallucinations.

Answer: False

Many other illnesses can resemble the symptoms of schizophrenia including hallucinations. Schizophrenia should NEVER be a hasty diagnosis before every other possible reason is ruled out first. If a doctor issues an official diagnosis of schizophrenia based on hallucinations alone, see another doctor immediately!
10. People with schizophrenia have been shown by law enforcement records to be more violent than the general population.

Answer: False

People with schizophrenia are on the average LESS violent than the general population. In reality they are usually anxious, fearful of others, and passive. The false perception that the mentally ill are a violent lot is not helped by its depiction in Hollywood movies.
