quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Round 1: Algebra Question: 1 Solve this equation x/2 − 4 = 3

Answer: 14

x/2 − 4 = 3 Multiply both sides by 2.
x - 8 = 6 Add the 8 to the 6.
x = 14
2. Round 1: Algebra Question: 2 Factorise 24a + 16

Answer: 8(3a + 2)

To factorise an equation you must find the highest common factor between the 2 numbers and put that number on the outside of the brackets. Then divide both sides by that number and put them inside the brackets.
3. Round 2: Data Handling Question: 1 Calculate the mean of the numbers. 10, 14, 10, 12, 10, 11, 12, 10, 11, 9, 12.

Answer: 11

To work out the mean you must add all the numbers in the set of data together. Then divide the total by the amount of numbers.
All the numbers added together equal 121 divided by 11 equals 11.
4. Round 2: Data Handling Question: 2 Calculate the median of this set of numbers 10, 14, 10, 12, 10, 11, 12, 10, 11, 9, 12.

Answer: 11

To find the median put the numbers in numerical order:
9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 12, 14.
Then find the middle number:
9 10 10 10 10 11 11 12 12 12 14.
The middle number is 11 so it is the median.
5. Round 3: Number Question: 1 A farmer has 630 eggs. They are to be placed in trays. Each tray holds 48 eggs. How many trays can be fully filled?

Answer: 13

The answer to the question is 13 trays. You would have 6 eggs left over.

To solve this question you needed to:
divide 630 by 48;
subtract to get 15;
then divide 150 by 48,
and then subtract to get 6.
6. Round 3: Number Question: 2 In a town, the ratio of left-handed people to right-handed people is 2:9. How many right-handed people would you expect to find in a group of 132 people?

Answer: 108

To solve this you must:
Add the two parts of the ratio.
2 + 9 = 11.
Then divide the amount of people by the total ratio to work out the amount of people per part.
132 ÷ 11 = 12
Multiply the 9 right-handed people by the amount of people per part.
9 × 12 = 108 people.
7. Round 4: Shape Question: 1 One side of a right angled triangle is 6 cm and another is 8 cm. Calculate the length of the unknown hypotenuse.

Answer: 10

To work out the length of an unknown side you must:
Square the lengths you know: 6 squared = 36, 8 squared = 64.
To find the square of the longest side, add them together 36 + 64 = 100.
Then find the square root square root of 100 = 10.
8. Round 4: Shape Question: 2 The area of a rectangle is 30cm squared. Work out what a triangle exactly half the size of the rectangle is.

Answer: 15 cm squared

A rectangle is 30 cm squared. Cut the rectangle along a diagonal to get a triangle exactly half the area of the rectangle.
9. Round 5: Mixed Math Question: 1 £1 is equal to $1.16 -- A business woman is travelling to New York. She changes £750 to US dollars. How many dollars does she get?

Answer: 870

To solve this question you must multiply 750 by the exchange rate which is 1.16.
10. Round 5: Mixed Math Question: 2 Leroy buys a TV for £400 plus VAT at 17 1/2%. How much does he pay for the TV?

Answer: £470

To solve this question you must multiply £400 by 1.175 which is equal to 17.5%. This gives you £470.
