Mixed Math Trivia Questions

1. What is the third-smallest prime number?

From Quiz
The Third Smallest

Answer: 5

A prime number has exactly 2 factors. Historically mathematicians have gone back and forth on whether 1 should be prime, but notice that it only has 1 factor so our current definition excludes it. (See if you can spot the later statements that would not be true if 1 was prime!) The smallest primes are 2, 3, 5 and 7. There are infinitely many primes: to show this, imagine somebody presents you with a complete list of finitely many primes. Multiply all their numbers together and add 1 to make a new number, N. Then, N can't be a multiple of anything on their list. For instance, if 2 is on their list then N is odd, so not a multiple of 2. If 3 is on their list then N is 1 more than a multiple of 3. And so forth. Therefore, the list you were given (and any finite list) is incomplete.

2. What is the area of an equilateral triangle with a side length of 4?

From Quiz Math I

Answer: 4*sqrt(3)

The formula for the area of an equilateral triangle is (s^2*sqrt(3))/4. Another way to solve the area is to bisect the triangle and solve for the area using base times height divided by 2.

3. What is the smallest positive integer that is both a multiple of 3 and a multiple of 11?

From Quiz What is the Smallest?

Answer: 33

For a number to be a multiple of 3 and a multiple of 11, it must be a multiple of 33. 33 is the smallest number that fits. Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33... Multiples of 11: 11, 22, 33...

4. We'll start off relatively easy. Two, four, six or eight: which is a possible number of elements in a square or n x n matrix?

From Quiz Two, Four, Six, Eight!

Answer: four

A square or n x n matrix is a matrix with the same number of columns and rows. Therefore, the number of elements has to be a square number. Of the choices, only four is a perfect square (2x2).

5. Lets start from the easy ones. The total number of squares on a chessboard (of any size) is ______.

From Quiz Mathemagic!

Answer: 204

This one may seem easy to you, but it is not that easy! Many may know that number of squares in a chessboard is 64. But, the question is "total number of squares in a chessboard". We only count the single squares, But not the combined ones. Let me explain(please draw a chessboard in a paper for your convenience to understand it). First, as usual, count the single squares on the chessboard. There are 8 horizontally and 8 vertically, i.e, 8 x 8 = 64 in total. Then, count the squares, made by combining 4 single squares. There are 7 horizontally and 7 vertically, i.e, 7 x 7 = 49 in total. Then, count the squares, made by combining 9 single squares. There are 6 horizontally and 6 vertically, i.e, 6 x 6 = 36 in total. Then, count the ones, made by combining 16 single squares. There are 5 x 5 = 25 in total Continue in this pattern. It may appear: 8 square + 7 square + 6 square + 5 square + 4 square + 3 square + 2 square + 1, which makes a total of 204 squares, which is the answer.

6. Round 1: Algebra Question: 1 Solve this equation x/2 − 4 = 3

From Quiz Do The Math

Answer: 14

x/2 − 4 = 3 Multiply both sides by 2. x - 8 = 6 Add the 8 to the 6. x = 14

7. This problem confounded mathematicians of the 1600s/1700s, nearly lived to see its 100th birthday, and brought great fame to its 28-year old solver, Leonhard Euler, who applied new (yet dubiously sound at the time) methods to confront it.

From Quiz Potpourri on Difficult/Unsolved Mathematics

Answer: Basel problem

The Basel problem asks for the value of the infinite sum of the reciprocals of every perfect square number greater than 0. This is exactly equal to (pi^2)/6, or about 1.644934, as proved by Euler. This problem was first set forth in the early 1600s, and was solved in 1735 by means of extrapolating properties of finite polynomials to the Taylor series expansion of the sine function (with a few other manipulations), and although his logic was somewhat doubted due to logical questions that Euler couldn't sufficiently answer, his obtained answer through the method matched perfectly with calculations. "Number Theory: An Approach Through History" by André Weil

8. Pi, the mathematical constant that denotes the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, is also known as Archimedes' Constant. Where did Archimedes, who lived in the third century BC and provided an approximation for pi, hail from?

From Quiz Weapons Of Math Destruction

Answer: Syracuse, Greece

The use of pi is widespread in many areas of mathematics and physics. Perhaps one of the best known formulae to involve pi is that for the area of a circle, given by "pi multiplied by the square of the circle's radius."

9. How many legs are there altogether on 2 spiders and 3 crickets?

From Quiz Maths with Animals!

Answer: 34

Spiders have 8 legs each and crickets have 6 legs each. Altogether that would be (2 x 8)+ (3 x 6) which equals 34 legs.

10. The capital sigma is used to denote the summation of a series of numbers. On the other hand, which Greek letter is used to denote the product of a series of numbers?

From Quiz What's the Product?

Answer: Pi

The lower case pi denotes the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. It is an irrational number, 3.142... On the contrary, the upper case pi denotes the product of a series of numbers.

11. Which Greek letter is used to denote summation in mathematics?

From Quiz What's the Sum?

Answer: Sigma

The upper case sigma is the notation for summation or addition operation. The lower case sigma is used to denote the standard deviation of a set of data in statistics.

12. Exponents: How many digits does the number 10 to the 100th power have?

From Quiz Math Trivia 5

Answer: 101

10 to the 100th power when written out is a 1 followed by 100 zeros, so the number has 101 digits.

13. Arithmetic: What is the product of 8 and 5?

From Quiz Math Trivia 4

Answer: 40

8 times 5 is 40. The word "product" always refers to multiplication.

14. Arithmetic: What is the remainder when 25 is divided by 8?

From Quiz Math Trivia 3

Answer: 1

25 = 3*8 + 1, so the quotient is 3 and the remainder is 1.

15. Arithmetic: What is the value of 3 + (2*7) ? Here * denotes multiplication.

From Quiz Math Trivia 1

Answer: 17

By order of operations, you need to do the multiplication first, then the addition: 3 + 2*7 = 3 + 14 = 17

16. A very easy one to warm up with! Six sevens are ?

From Quiz "Ultimate" Arithmetic

Answer: 42

Primary or elementary maths should have made sure that you know your tables well enough to do this one.

17. The famous Pythagorean Theorem, which states that the sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse, is actually a special case of what theorem/law?

From Quiz Mathematics - Eat it up!

Answer: Cosine Law

The Pythagorean Theorem is just a modified version of the Cosine Law that applies only to right triangles. The Cosine Law, c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab cosC, will yield the Pythagorean Theorem, when C = 90 degrees. Since cos90 = 0, the term "2ab cosC" disappears and you're left with the Pythagorean Theorem.

18. How many faces does an icosahedron have?

From Quiz Mathematical Madness

Answer: 20

An icosahedron is any 20 faced solid shape. The faces of a regular icosahedron are equilateral triangles.

19. How many diameters can a circle of radius 10 cm have?

From Quiz A Tricky 'n' Easy Maths Quiz! (6)

Answer: infinite

I did not ask to find the diameter of the circle - I asked how many diameters a circle has. The radius was just given to confuse you, so that you could click on 20. Remember that a circle has an unlimited number of diameters and radii, and infinite lines of symmetry, as well. A 'diameter' is defined as a chord that passes through the centre of a circle. It is also the longest chord in a circle. A 'radius' is the distance between the centre of a circle and any point on the circumference (The plural of radius is radii). Also remember that Diameter = 2 * Radius, and Radius = 1/2 * Diameter.

20. This kind of number is divisible by only one and itself. The first few examples are 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11.

From Quiz Special Numbers

Answer: Prime

There are an infinite number of primes. The largest known in September 2003, when this quiz was written, was (2^13,466,917)-1. It is 4,053,946 digits long. By 2013, this was improved to (2^57,885,161)−1, a 17,425,170 digit number, over four times as long!

21. What is the value of 3x^2 (y[x^3])^2?

From Quiz A Tricky 'n' Easy Maths Quiz! (5)

Answer: 3x^8 * y^2

This question was tricky. Many people often do not understand the expression because of too many brackets or powers or do a mistake while solving it. Always remember that if an expression contains brackets, solve the stuff in the brackets first. If it contains brackets within brackets, then solve the stuff in the inner brackets first. 3x^2 (y [x^3])^2 = 3x^2 (y * x^3)^2 = 3x^2 * y * x^3 * y * x^3 = 3x^2 * y^2 * x^6 = 3x^8 * y^2

22. A kite's diagonal (AC) is 4.5 cm long. The other diagonal (BD) is 3.5 cm longer than the diagonal AC. What is the area of the kite ABCD?

From Quiz A Tricky 'n' Easy Maths Quiz! (3)

Answer: 18 cm^2

The formula for finding the area of a kite or a rhombus is: 1/2 * (product of diagonals) The diagonal labelled AC is 4.5 cm long. The other diagonal labelled BD is 3.5 cm longer than the diagonal AC. In other words it is 4.5 cm + 3.5 cm (or 8 cm) long. Then using the formula: 1/2 * (product of diagonals) = 1/2 * (4.5 * 8) = 1/2 * (36) = 18 cm^2.

23. 3,453,899 x 0 = ?

From Quiz Maths Mixture

Answer: 0

Anything times zero equals zero.

24. The equation 5y^2 - 3x^2 = 25 will yield what type of graph? (Note: ^ is used as "raised to the power of".)

From Quiz Math Masters

Answer: Hyperbola

In a circle, the x and y coefficients must be equal and positive. In an ellipse, they have to be positive. In a parabola, only one of the terms would be squared.

25. Any even number which is at least 4 can be written as the sum of two primes. This is ...?

From Quiz Million Dollar Math

Answer: Goldbach's Conjecture

The conjecture was originally stated in a 1742 lecture from Goldbach to Euler. It has been verified for numbers up to 100 trillion, but that is not yet a proof. The Russian mathematician Vinogradov has come tantalizing close by proving every (large enough) odd number is the sum of THREE primes. Unfortunately, you can no longer win a guaranteed million for a proof of this. The publisher of the book below put a time limit on the contest, and that limit expired in 2002.

26. What is the meaning of 'crore'?

From Quiz Math Quest

Answer: 10 million

We get this word from the Indian 'Karor'.

27. If the measure of the angles in a triangle are in a ratio of 3:4:5, the measure of an exterior angle of the triangle can NOT be (in degrees)?

From Quiz More High School Math

Answer: 165

180 divided by 12x (for the angles) is 15. so the measurements must be 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 75 degrees. The exterior angles will be 135, 120 and 105 degrees, respectively.

28. What is the third-smallest triangular number?

From Quiz The Third Smallest

Answer: 6

Draw a row with 1 dot, then a row below with 2 dots, then a row below with 3 dots. You have a triangle made up of 6 dots. By adding more rows, or just by calculating 1+2+3+...+n, you can construct all the triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21 and so on. There are infinitely many triangular numbers, of the form n(n+1)/2 where n is a positive integer.

29. What is the smallest positive integer that is both a square number and a triangular number (other than 1)?

From Quiz What is the Smallest?

Answer: 36

The sequence of triangular numbers begins with 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36... The sequence of square numbers begins with 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36... Other than 1, the first fit is the number 36. 1225 also fits, but 36 is smaller.
