Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tornadoes are born from severe thunderstorms. In the USA, storms can travel in any direction, but one direction is more common. In which of these directions is a US tornado most likely to travel?

Answer: eastward

Winter and early spring tornadoes are often associated with strong, frontal storm systems formed in the Central states.
2. In the U.S., an increase in wind speed and a change in direction create airflow that first appears spinning how and where?

Answer: horizontally in the lower atmosphere

As the air rises within the storm, it will tilt the rotating air from horizontal to vertical.
3. Where is the one of the most dangerous places to be during a tornado?

Answer: a mobile home

The best place to be is an underground shelter or basement. If there isn't one, go to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible. If you are caught outside, find a ditch or depression and lie flat and cover your head. Your car is another very dangerous place to be so don't try to outrun the tornado!
4. Flash floods have killed over 10,000 people in the US since 1900. What type of area is extremely susceptible to flash flooding?

Answer: urban areas

Because a high percentage of its surface area is composed of durable streets, roofs, and parking lots, urban area runoff occurs very rapidly. With nothing to stop its progress, the runoff can quickly become a flash flood.
5. What causes 9 out of 10 hurricane fatalities?

Answer: storm-surge

Water that is pushed up onto otherwise dry land by onshore winds is called storm-surge. Friction between the water and the moving air creates drag that can build the surge up to depths greater than 20 feet.
6. In 1900, hurricane related floods killed more than 6,000 people in which southern U.S. city?

Answer: Galveston, TX

In 1900 there were no satellites or radar to help predict the weather. Warnings were issued by the agency of the time, the U.S. Weather Bureau, advising people to go to higher ground. However, many chose to watch the huge waves instead of heading to safety.
7. What U.S. state has recorded twice as many lightning deaths or injuries as any other?

Answer: Florida

The top 10 states are: Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado and Texas. When you hear thunder, you are already within the range where the next ground flash may occur so head for cover!
8. If caught outside your house in a thunderstorm, where is the safest place to be?

Answer: in your car

Of course the best place to be is inside a sturdy building but your car with a metal roof and sides is the next best place to be. The metal shell of your car is what protects you - not the rubber tires!
9. Snowflakes actually start out as what?

Answer: a soil particle

Dirt is carried up into the atmosphere by the wind. Ice forms around the dirt and as the crystal grows, it becomes heavier and starts falling. During this trip down, it collides with other things in the atmosphere, which determines its final shape.
10. Where on the globe do snow and ice usually hang out?

Answer: cryosphere

The cryosphere includes sea ice, freshwater ice, glaciers, snow and permafrost (frozen ground). The Greek word "kryos" means frost or icy cold.
