Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the African continent, the highest reliably recorded temperature of the twentieth century was 55°C (131°F). It happened in 1931, on July 7, in which of these four countries?

Answer: Tunisia

The three incorrect answers were all much cooler, barely even causing you to sweat. Zambia topped out at 42.4 °C (108.3 °F), with Botswana at 44.0 °C (111.2 °F), and Ghana at 43.8 °C (110.8 °F). None came close to Tunisia's 55°C (131°F). Just thinking about them makes me want to grab an ice tea. I am not from Long Island, so just a sweet tea.
2. In Asia, two countries are tied for the temperature most likely to cause a person to melt - one in 1942 and the other in 2017. Which two would that be?

Answer: Israel, Iran

Israel, 1942, and Iran, 2017, 54 °C (129 °F)
Japan, 2018 and South Korea, 2018, 41° C (105.0° F)
Jordan. 2002 and China 2017, 50.3° C (122.5° F)
Syria, 2010, and Turkey, 2021 49.2° C (120.6° F)

Please order your ice cream in a bowl, as it will melt before you can lick it off a cone.
3. Europe doesn't get that hot, but here are some places that have had some really hot stuff. Sweden is not a choice here, so which country recorded the hottest day, 48.0° C (118.4° F), in 1977?

Answer: Greece

Greece - 48.0°C (118.4°F) 1977
Montenegro - 44.8°C (112.6°F) 2007 & 2012
Serbia - 44.9°C (112.9°F) 2007
France - 46.0°C (114.8°F) 2019

July 10, 1977 was a serious scorcher in Athens. No wonder the runner from Marathon passed away when he got to Athens (was it heat stroke?). Of course, it was a different day, but it may have been similar circumstances, and this is sheer speculation.
4. For North America, which includes everything north of Panama and all of the island nations, this one will be a little different. Give me the name of the country in third place on the highest temperature scale, behind the United States and Mexico, recording this temperature in 2021.

Answer: Canada

Canada, 2021 - 49.6 °C (121.3°F)
Cuba, 2020 - 39.7 °C (103.5°F)
Guatemala, 2011 - 45.0°C (113.0°F)
Panama,1998 - 40.0°C (104.0°F)

Death Valley, U.S. is the hottest place on the continent, but few people know of the desert landscape in the centre of the British Columbian mountains near the west coast of Canada. The mountains strip out the rain and block much of the wind, so summers can get a little nasty, with wild fires similar to California's. 40 °C is the temperature I have set for my hot tub, so, it can be enjoyable if dealt with appropriately. Add another 16.7 °C and I will be getting up and moving out. Even an ice cold Pepsi will not get me to stay.
5. On the South American continent, which country had the hottest single day temperature in the recent past, between 1900 and 2020? Remember the equator, the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Capricorn? The sun is directly overhead between the two tropics all year long and Ecuador got its name by being on the equator.

Answer: Argentina

The real heat is in the deserts, and Brazil doesn't have one. Their highest single day temperature stopped at 44.8 °C (112.6 °F), recorded in 2020. Not chilly, but not as hot as Chile, which got up to 44.9 °C (112.8 °F) in 2017. Still not that hot, so add in Paraguay at 45.0 °C (113.0 °F), from 2009, and you are almost there. And the winner is - ta da - Argentina at a blistering 48.9 °C (120.0 °F), recorded in 1905, in the desert.
6. Oceania includes Australia and all of the neighbouring Pacific Islands. Australia is too obvious, so I am looking for number two. Which island nation had the next highest heat day, recorded between 1970 and 2020?

Answer: New Zealand

New Zealand at 42.4°C (108.3 °F), 1973 is the leader among the choices given.
Solomon Islands - 36.1 °C (97.0 °F) 2010
Vanuatu - 36.2 °C (97.2 °F) 2016
Wallis and Futuna - 35.8 °C (96.4 °F) 2016

None of them can hold a fire stick to Australia - 50.7 °C (123.3 °F) in 1960 & 2022.
7. In the world as a whole, what region had the most consecutive days above 37.8 °C (100 °F) in the twentieth century? The number is 160 days, set between October 1923 and April 1924.

Answer: Marble Bar, Western Australia

Marble Bar, Western Australia was settled only after gold was found in the area. Without the gold draw, there is no reason to struggle with the oppressive heat, leaving a bustling town to become a hamlet.
8. Worldwide, what region had the highest naturally occurring ground temperature - recorded in 2005? This measurement was made by thermal imaging satellites, which includes larger areas than the measurements in all other questions.

Answer: Port Sudan, Sudan

First, the factual numbers - 84 °C (183.2 °F) one day in Sudan. It is hard to breathe in this condition. Port Sudan has an average yearly daytime high of 33.2 °C (91.8 °F) measured 4 to 7 ft. above the ground and in shade. Ground temperatures can be as much as 50 °C (122.0 °F) above the air temperature. Hey, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the desert.
9. Worldwide, what region had the most consecutive days above 48.9 °C (120 °F) in the twentieth century? It happened for 43 days in 1917.

Answer: Death Valley, California, U.S.A.

This took place from 6 July through 17 August 1917. I just wonder who checked the thermometer each day. Did they just look outside to see the scale on the shady side of the porch, or did they travel to a station to get the measurement?
10. It has been scientifically proven that you must cool down to fall asleep. What place has the record of making it too hot to sleep, in 2017? That is, the highest recorded overnight "LOW" temperature, up to that time?

Answer: Khasab weather station, Oman

This was measured on 17 June 2017 - 44.2 °C (111.6 °F). You could not even cool off by jumping into your pool. The water would be hotter than a hot tub at maximum temperature.
