Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these is NOT a class characteristic of a fingerprint?

Answer: Bifurcation

A class characteristic is one that puts the item into a group - such as the overall pattern of the fingerprint. Individual characteristics are the little marks, the friction ridges, etc that can individualise and since fingerprints are unique to each individual then it connects the fingerprint to a specific person.
2. Forensic Science is the Science pertaining to what?

Answer: Law

3. True / False: Fingerprint evidence is infallible.

Answer: False

Fingerprint evidence is subjective and depends on the expert. And humans are not infallible. There have been several cases spotted throughout history across the globe where convictions were reached purely on the fingerprint evidence and the expert turned out to be wrong.
4. SOCO stands for?

Answer: Scene of Crime Officer

A Scene of Crime Officer, in Australia, deals with mostly volume crime: stolen motor vehicle, burglary, minor assault, for example.
5. True / False: DNA is stored in the white blood cell component of blood.

Answer: True

6. Which one of these is NOT a presumptive test for blood?

Answer: Acid Phosphatase

Acid Phosphatase is a presumptive test for semen. Acid Phosphatase is an enzyme found in high concentrations in the seminal plasma of human males. The difference between the presumptive and confirmatory tests is basically that a presumptive test gives an indication that it could be but there are usually a number of false positives.

A confirmatory test on the other hand has very few false positives (if any) and confirms what the substance is. A common false positive for Hemastix and Luminol is rust (since they both react with the iron in blood and rust), another is bleach.
7. True / False: Value of soil as evidence resides with its prevalence at crime scenes and its transferability between the scene and the criminal.

Answer: True

8. What is a confirmatory test for Species of Origin?

Answer: Ouchterlony Test

The Ouchterlony Test is an immunodiffusion test. An agar plate (which is a gel) is made up with a series of wells in the shape of a circle surrounding a central well. The typical setup is that the central well contains an anti-sera for human blood and the wells surrounding the central well are unknown samples.

They all diffuse through the gel. Anything that is not human blood will not react with the anti-sera. If a sample is human blood then a precipitin line is formed.
9. True / False: The order of examination of fingerprints is: Analysis, Comparison, Verification, Evaluation.

Answer: False

The correct order to examine a fingerprint is: Analysis, you examine the unknown fingerprint. Comparison, you compare the unknown to the known. Evaluation, you evaluate your findings and make a conclusion. Finally, Verification, your findings must be verified by another fingerprint expert, they start from the beginning and make their own conclusions then you compare the results from the two examinations.
10. What is the name of the light source that is commonly used in Forensic Investigation?

Answer: PoliLight

The PoliLight has its advantage in the fact that it can display wavelengths from 400 - 750nm. This includes the tip of ultra violet, all visible light and the tip of infrared light. Some uses for the PoliLight include: distinguishing between different inks, increasing the contrast in fingerprints and many many more.
