Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which branch of science concerns itself with the study of stars, moons, planets, and other celestial objects?

Answer: Astronomy

Astronomy, which also deals with supernovae explosions and cosmic background radiation, is one of the oldest branches of science known to man. The work of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton was crucial to the Scientific Revolution and the development of modern science.

Here's an old joke about the branches of science and technology: If it's green and wiggles, it's biology; if it stinks it's chemistry; and if it doesn't work, it's physics (or engineering).

2. There are four fundamental modes of heat transfer. Convection, Radiation, Mass Transfer. There is one mode missing, what is the fourth mode of heat transfer called?

Answer: Conduction

Conduction is the transfer of heat (energy) between neighbouring atom molecules. This occurs when molecules vibrate rapidly generating energy (heat) and transfer this energy to a neigbouring molecule. Conduction as a form of heat transfer usually happens between or within solid objects.

Many metals are good conductors of heat and that is why metals are used in the application of heat transfer. For example, stoves, radiators, filaments in electric heaters are all made from metal.

3. Cyanea heluensis is a new species of flowering plant with only a single specimen discovered. In which state in the U.S., known for surfing and volcanoes, was this botanical gem found?

Answer: Hawaii

In December of 2020, Cyanea heluensis was found in Maui. It is related to the haha which is found there but it has unique leaves and long curved white flowers which make it a new species. A special paste was applied to produce new growth and that new growth was taken to Maui's Olinda Rare Plant Facility to be propagated.

5. Which 16-17th century German scientist helped to establish the validity of the Copernican system?

Answer: Johannes Kepler

German astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) used the precise data left by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) to help validate the laws of planetary motion, speed and orbit.

Konrad Lorenz was a 20th century Austrian author and student of ethology and won the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1973.

Gregor Mendel was a 19th century monk and botanist who performed many plant breeding experiments and laid the foundation for modern genetics.

6. An objective way of measuring the level of conscious state of a person in a coma is named after which Scottish city that is also home to Rangers and Celtic?

Answer: Glasgow

The Glasgow Coma Scale was proposed in 1974 by two Neurosurgery professors at the Institute of Neurological Sciences of the University of Glasgow. Graham Teasdale and Bryan Jennett designed the scale to test responses of patients under three categories - eye, verbal and motor.

The results of the responses to stimuli are given numerical values and the sum of the three tests is considered to determine the level of consciousness. The lowest score in the scale is three, where all three tests are scored at one each, and the highest possible score is 15.

A GCS score of three corresponds to deep coma, or even death, and 15 is fully conscious.

7. What happened in the world of computers on September 9, 1945? Hint: think Y2K.

Answer: The first computer bug was found

On this date Admiral Grace Hopper taped a real bug into a logbook referring to it as the first actual computer bug. The term was in use before as a minor glitch, so when a bug was found in Harvard's Mark II computer Hopper thought it worthy of note. Soon the word had become part of every computer nerd's vocabulary.

8. Which human body part shares its name with the curved surface of a liquid?

Answer: Meniscus

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage found in your knee joint. They are there to provide a cushion between the femur and tibia, and there are two of them in each knee. Each of the menisci is shaped like a 'C' and they are rubbery and tough. It is possible to damage the menisci, which may need surgery to repair but usually can be resolved using rest/ice/elevation.

9. Which of these does not fit with the other three?

Answer: Radium

Radium belongs to the s-block in the periodic table and is radioactive in nature. Radon, neon and krypton belong to the p-block. Most importantly they belong to group 18 and are called "noble or inert gases", because they are non-reactive with other elements. They have completely filled orbitals and this makes them non-reactive.

10. Albert Einstein formulated two theories that together form what is commonly called the theory of relativity. These two theories are:

Answer: special & general relativity

Einstein developed his special relativity theory first. It explains how particles interact, but it was his later general relativity theory that explains the effect gravity has on these interactions. His theories replaced the theory of mechanics that had been developed by Isaac Newton while particle theory proposes that all matter is made up of many small particles that are constantly in motion.
