Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following would most likely be a good career choice for someone who struggles with social interaction?

Answer: computer programmer

Computer programmers need to be strong in logical thinking and attention to details, two things that autistic people with a normal or higher intelligence are good at. The other three professions can be hard for an autistic person because social interactions are important; they also can lead to a lot of stress, which is something many people with an autistic condition do not handle well.

2. Red soil is red in colour due to the presence of which compound?

Answer: ferric oxide

The chemical formula of ferric oxide is Fe2O3. Hydrated ferric oxide is commonly known as rust.

The texture of red soil may vary from gravelly to loamy. Red soil is low in humus content. It is generally not very fertile.

3. Potassium nitrate, once used as a preservative to cure meats, is now mainly found in fertilisers and explosives. What was its previously common name?

Answer: Saltpetre

Saltpetre helped the preserving salt to penetrate the meat more evenly and also preserved its pink colour. Although it is a preservative and has pharmaceutical applications, potassium nitrate is on the Hazardous Substance List as it can be seriously harmful if directly ingested or inhaled - not to mention its use in gunpowder and other explosives, besides fertilisers.

The name saltpetre can apply to both potassium and sodium nitrate.

6. Which of these general meteorological terms differs from the others, as it isn't atmospherically based?

Answer: Flood

When weather people talk about floods, they are referring to a deluge of water. Fog, smog and haze are all going to be air based. Flood can also be used as a verb for light, but light amounts aren't a factor in weather forecasts.

7. Who came up with the concept of measuring mechanical production in terms of "horsepower"?

Answer: James Watt

James Watt was a Scottish mechanical engineer and inventor who lived from 1736 until 1819. He is most well known for his invention of the Watt steam engine which he developed in 1776 as an improvement upon other less sophisticated designs of others. When he needed to express in concrete images the amount of power his machine could produce, and based on earlier musings by one Thomas Savery in 1702, Watt calculated that one horse, during a day's work, could turn a large mill wheel around at the rate of 144 times per hour, which, based on the size of the wheel, equated to a horse travelling x number of feet per hour.

By then applying his estimated horse's pulling force (its power) at 180 lbs, he arrived at the amount of energy output per hour of the horse - as one horsepower.

8. 2, 3, 5 and 7 are the first four prime numbers. As you search for larger and larger primes, what happens to the density of prime numbers?

Answer: They become less frequent

A prime number is defined as a number that only has two divisors, itself and the number one. For example, 5 is prime as the only whole numbers between 1 and 5 that divide a whole number of times into 5 are 1 and 5. As you consider larger numbers, the average distance between prime numbers increases.

For example, 40% of the numbers 1-10 are prime, but only 25% of the numbers 1-100 carry the property, and less than 17% between 1-1000. This makes sense intuitively, as it is more difficult for larger numbers to be prime - they have to dodge all the numbers below them!

9. What is the name of one of the earliest kinds of pump, the invention of which is traditionally credited to a famous Greek?

Answer: Archimedes' Screw

This ancient device to raise water is still used today in some countries for drainage and irrigation.
Archimedes' screw is a simple mechanism consisting of a spiral blade revolving within a tube. By placing the lower end of the tube in water and setting the screw in motion, water is lifted to the top.
It is believed to have been invented by Archimedes in the 3rd century BC.
