Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A friend invites me over for coffee and donuts. As we start on our second cup, he gasps and grabs his stomach. When I ask him what is wrong, he tells me that he has sudden, extremely severe, pains in his gut and back, and a throbbing near his navel. From what might he be suffering that causes me to call the emergency services?

Answer: Abdominal aortic aneurysm

These symptoms are consistent with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which develops very slowly without symptoms and can then strike quite quickly. Many factors may have helped cause it such as heredity, smoking, atherosclerosis, or trauma. Immediate medical treatment is necessary to avoid serious complications, including death.
2. Because I am your sister, you call me and indicate that your husband suddenly slurs his words, has trouble keeping his balance, and says he feels numb in his left arm. When she asks what his problem might be, what do I tell her?

Answer: He may have suffered a stroke

Those are the classic symptoms of a stroke, along with vision problems and a severe headache. I also tell her to call emergency services immediately because the faster a stroke victim is treated, the better his/her prognosis will be.
3. My brother, who does not believe in preventative vaccines, calls me and asks me what to do. His daughter's cheeks are both enlarged, she has a fever and a headache, and she has no appetite. What problem do I suggest his daughter may have?

Answer: Mumps

In my opinion, she may have contracted mumps. I recommend that my brother call a pediatrician, explain the symptoms (mumps is, of course, very contagious), and request an appointment as soon as possible. I also suggest that she could have been spared this disease if he allowed vaccines.
4. My mother stops in to visit and confides in me that my father seems to be having problems. When I ask what they are, she tells me that he has trouble remembering some things, he often needs to grope for the proper word to use, he seems disoriented at times, and he appears depressed. I recognize that my father is most likely suffering from which disease?

Answer: Dementia

The symptoms clearly indicate dementia. When I ask my mother if Dad also has difficulty organizing and problem-solving, seems agitated, and occasionally experiences hallucinations, she says that he does. Although I recommend that she take him as soon as possible to a gerontologist, I do not tell her that dementia has no cure and is usually progressive.
5. My wife hesitantly approaches me and blurts out that she has felt two lumps in her left breast and has experienced a bloody discharge from the nipple. We both fear that she has which disease?

Answer: Breast cancer

Brest cancer is, of course, the most likely cause. That cancer can sneak up on a woman, having no symptoms until it is a relatively advanced stage. When I immediately insisted on an appointment with an oncologist and explained the symptoms, the doctor scheduled several tests prior to the appointment. [On a good note, breast cancer is often successfully treated.]
6. I invited my father over to watch the Super Bowl on my huge 3-D TV. After he arrived, he confided that he has been having vision problems, including clouded sight, difficulty seeing at night, and seeing "halos" around lights. After the game, what do I suggest he may have?

Answer: Cataracts

His symptoms are consistent with cataracts. I urge him to schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. I also tell him that laser surgery can usually "cure" his cataracts easily by replacing the eye lens. Halos around lights can also be associated with glaucoma, but the other symptoms fit with cataracts.
7. My friend calls me because he is puzzled about his son who has a fever and dry cough, a rash, and reddish spots on his skin. I inform him that I think his son may have which of these problems?

Answer: Measles

To me, a classic case of measles. I tell my friend to keep his son away from other children, including his siblings, and not send him to school or any other place where children are. I also tell him to call the pediatrician, tell him what the problem is, and arrange for a private appointment when other children would not be present.
8. I am out golfing with three good friends. Suddenly one of them grabs his chest, has shortness of breath, and complains of pain in his neck and arms. Why do I use my cell phone to call both emergency services and the emergency number of the golf course?

Answer: Probable heart attack

These symptoms are, almost without exception, those of a heart attack (although heart attacks can occur with mild or no symptoms). The sooner anyone with these symptoms can get medical help, the better the chances of survival. Therefore, both calls were necessary. Calling emergency services would get an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) there as soon as possible. Notifying the golf course might bring an EMT on staff or a rapid way to get my friend to where the EMTs could more easily reach him.
9. Although we had kept regularly in touch since graduation, I was surprised to see my old college roommate on my doorstep. Coughing, he asked me if he could come in. Once in, he explained that he believed he had a serious health problem that he did not want to discuss with his wife. He told me that he had a persistent cough, was coughing up blood, and was losing weight rapidly. What did I think his health problem was likely to be?

Answer: Lung cancer

The symptoms are likely to be those of lung cancer. Although I told my roommate that and urged him to get to an oncologist, I also had to inform him that the symptoms of lung cancer do not usually appear until the disease is at an advanced stage. I also begged him to discuss his problem with his wife.
10. After being on the other side of the continent for many years, I fly to the east coast and stop in to visit my 85 year old grandmother. I notice, of course, that she is much older than I remember her. And I also see that she is stooped and bent over, and seems much shorter than she was the last time I saw her. From what do I believe she is suffering?

Answer: Osteoporosis

This seems a classic case of osteoporosis. That is a disease that has practically no symptoms until it appears and has no cures. I hug my grandmother and eat the humble meal she has laboriously prepared. I do not let my tears show.
