Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The time between cycles that your molten plastic sits in the barrel is called?

Answer: Residence Time

The longer your melted plastic sits in the barrel of your Injection Molding machine causes the plastic to degrade reducing its overall properties.
2. When molten plastic is injected in to your mold at high speed what happens to the polymer strands?

Answer: They become linear aligned.

The faster you inject plastic the more linear your polymer strands become.
3. You hear a process technician say that your part has splay. Which of these could have caused this?

Answer: There was moisture in the melted plastic.

When you mold a part with moisture still in the plastic, it causes the polymer strands to break. Once the strands are broken you cannot reuse the plastic anymore. Splay can also be caused by overheating the plastic or by heating for too long.
4. Why would I want glass fibers in my resin?

Answer: To increase part strength.

Glass reinforced resins are used when you need to increase your overall part strength. However glass filled resins can make your overall part stronger it also makes it less visually appealing.
5. A resin's (plastic) tensile strength is?

Answer: The amount which polymer strands can be stretched before breaking.

A resin's tensile strength is important when finding the correct resin to use for parts requiring strength and resistance to breaking.
6. What type of resin is used to make CD's?

Answer: PC(Polycarbonate).

Polycarbonate is a very strong and durable plastic. It one of the more difficult resins to mold due to its non-Newtonian properties.
7. If my molded part does not cool enough before being ejected from the mold what happens?

Answer: The part warps and shrinks.

If your part does not have enough time to cool before ejection it can lose its shape including shrinking.
8. Why would you not mold a toothbrush with PVC(Polyvinyl chloride) plastic?

Answer: PVC is Toxic.

PVC has some carcinogenic properties.
9. Why would we want to make vents in our molding die?

Answer: To allow gas to escape.

When plastic is injected into your mold, gases from the molten plastic build up in the tool causing problems such as voids or even burning of the plastic.
10. How does gas from molten plastic cause burning in the plastic?

Answer: The trapped gas ignites from the heat generated by pressure.

The pressures used to inject molten plastic is tremendous. Pressure creates heat and eventually the gas reaches a point where it ignites burning the plastic in the mold.
