Answer: (A numeral)
Question 2 of 10
2. An octopus is swimming 200 metres below the surface of the ocean. It then dives 25 metres further down for a few minutes and then further down for another 120 metres. If the octopus finally swims up 300 metres, how far is it from the ocean's surface?

Answer: (A numeral)
Question 3 of 10

Answer: (A numeral)
Question 5 of 10
5. An ant carries 1 crumb on the first day and 1 crumb on the second day. On the third day it carries 2 crumbs, on the fourth day it carries 3 crumbs. On day five it carries 5 crumbs and on day six it carries 8 crumbs. According to this sequence, how many crumbs will the ant carry on the seventh day? Write your answer as a numeral.

Answer: (This sequence is known as the Fibonacci sequence!)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many legs are there altogether on 2 spiders and 3 crickets?

Answer: 34

Spiders have 8 legs each and crickets have 6 legs each. Altogether that would be (2 x 8)+ (3 x 6) which equals 34 legs.
2. An octopus is swimming 200 metres below the surface of the ocean. It then dives 25 metres further down for a few minutes and then further down for another 120 metres. If the octopus finally swims up 300 metres, how far is it from the ocean's surface?

Answer: 45 metres

The octopus travels from 200 metres below another 25 metres, ending up at 225 (200 + 25) metres. It then travels down another 120 metres, ending up at 345 (225 + 120) metres below. It finally moves upwards, ending up at 45 metres (345 - 300) below the ocean's surface.
3. Giant hummingbirds are known to beat their wings about 10 times per second. How many beats would this be in a period of 1.5 minutes?

Answer: 900 beats

Giant hummingbirds beat their wings slower than the smaller variety, which can beat up to 80 times a second. To answer the question above, we multiply 10 by 90 (1.5 minutes = 90 seconds) which equals 900.
4. If a zebra has 50 black stripes and a tiger has 60 black stripes, how many black stripes are there altogether if there are 2 tigers and 5 zebras?

Answer: 370

Five zebras with 50 stripes makes 250 stripes. Two tigers with 60 stripes makes 120 stripes. Altogether 250 + 120 equals a total of 370 stripes.

Answer: 13

The Fibonacci sequence states that to create the next number in a series you must add together the previous two answers. Therefore, the sum of 5 and 8 is 13.
6. Six female dogs have 4 puppies each. Half of these puppies are female and grow up to also have 4 puppies each. How many dogs are there in total?

Answer: 78

The six original dogs have 4 puppies each which is a total of 24 puppies. Half of these (12) have 4 puppies each which makes 48 new puppies. In total, we add together 6 + 24 + 48 which equals 78.
7. A rabbit and a frog had a race over a distance of 500 metres. The rabbit ran at a speed of 50 kilometres per hour. The frog finished the race in 5 minutes. Which of the two finished the race first?

Answer: Rabbit

The rabbit, travelling at 50 kilometres per hour (kph) will travel 500 metres in less than 1 minute. The rabbit will therefore beat the frog who takes 5 minutes to cover the same distance.
8. A rat has four toes on each of its front paws and five on each of its back paws. If a pet store owner counts 306 toes in the rat cage, how many rats does store have?

Answer: 17

Each rat will have 18 toes (4 + 4 + 5 + 5 = 18). So to find out how many rats there are, divide 306 by 18.
9. A fly lays her eggs in 3 equal batches. If the fly lays 400 eggs altogether in the first two batches, then how many eggs did the fly lay in total?

Answer: 600

Two thirds of the eggs are equal to 400 (the first two batches). This means that each batch is equal to 200 eggs. Three batches therefore equals 600 eggs (3 x 200).
10. At a local farm there are 20 animals altogether. The interesting thing is that there only chickens and donkeys. The farmer counts the legs and finds that there are 52 legs in total (not including himself!). How many chickens are on the farm?

Answer: 14

It is best to do this with algebra. Let the number of chickens be represented by C and donkeys by D. You can set up two algebraic equations (2C + 4D = 52 and C + D = 20) and solve them simultaneously (or by trial and error).
