Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've been told I don't look that bad, The worst compliment this woman's had! My zygomatic bones, Look like Tommy Lee Jones'! So, which facial part makes me feel sad?

Answer: cheekbone

Forming the prominence of the cheek, and along with the maxilla and palatine bone, providing the base (floor) for the orbit, the zygomatic bones are part of the zygomatic process. Also called the malar bone, zygomatic is a derivation of the Greek word for 'yoke'.

'High" cheekbones, those that are located higher on the face, are considered a hallmark of beauty in many cultures. So much so, that malar implants may be used to enhance a person's facial structure. Cheek augmentation can also be achieved through injections.
2. I know my thyroid is somewhere around - But it does not make a single sound! Can you tell me please, My curiosity appease - Just where might my thyroid be found?

Answer: neck

The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the front of the neck, situated against the larynx and trachea. It is the largest gland in the neck, and it secretes hormones needed for growth and development, and regulates the body's metabolism. Similar in shape to a butterfly, the thyroid is comprised of two lobes connected in the gland's lower half by the thyroid isthmus. Flexible yet strong, the neck supports the head and protects the neural pathways between the brain and the body.

In addition to the thyroid, the neck also houses the hyoid bone, the Adam's apple (thyroid cartilage), cricoid cartilage, the external carotid artery and trachea, and several other structures.
3. My hands are not quite as they should be, The doctor says it's syndactyly, This may be quite new, Not to me, but to you! So what is it that's different about me?

Answer: fused fingers

Syndactyly is the fusion of fingers or toes, and it is one of the most common congenital birth malformations. It is classified as simple if the fusion entails only tissue, and complex if the bones are fused. Involving either fingers or toes - or both - the condition can be corrected surgically, usually in the first few years of life.

In the absence of other syndromes, such as Apert syndrome or constriction band syndrome, the outcome of treatment can be relatively good.
4. I've been feeling quite unwell lately, And I need a cholecystectomy. So surgery is ahead, And the doctor said, He's taking which organ out of me?

Answer: gallbladder

A small organ, located just below the liver, the gallbladder stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. It is considerably important in the metabolic process, but its removal can be fairly well tolerated by most people. The most common gallbladder problem is the development of gallstones, which can impair the functioning of the gallbladder. Gallstones can possibly inhibit the flow of bile or cause it to back up, in what is referred to as a gallbladder attack. Not all stones cause problems, and some stones can be dissolved by lithotripsy (shockwave treatment) or chemical dissolution therapy. The downside to such treatments, as opposed to surgery, is that the stones may return.

The surgical removal of the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy, and can be performed as a laparoscopic or keyhole surgery, or an open surgery called a laparotomy.
5. I have been told I'm rather shapely, And could have modeled for Botticelli! My nates inspire, A Latin fire. But just what are they? Can you tell me?

Answer: buttocks

The Latin name for the buttocks is nates (singular, natis), but that term is rarely used. Human buttocks are comprised of four muscles - gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fasciae latae, covered with a layer of adipose tissue (fat).

Different cultures during different ages have had numerous opinions and attitudes about buttocks, from a sign of health and prosperity to a symbol of sexual attraction - or shame. Celebrated in songs such as "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot, and in various artworks including ancient Greek statues, and paintings by artists such as Diego Velázquez, buttocks have played a definite role throughout history.
6. I used to think jogging was fun, But now I dare not go for a run! I might spring a leak, Some organ is weak! The culprit is most likely which one?

Answer: urinary bladder

As part of the excretory system, each kidney passes urine into a ureter, which empties into the urinary bladder. The bladder is a muscular sac, lined by layers of muscle tissue that stretches to accommodate urine. The adult bladder, when empty, is about the size of a pear. Urine exits the bladder by way of the urethra, which has an internal and external sphincter.

The external sphincter is voluntarily controlled. The control of urination for men and women can be lost due to a number of reasons, but for many women it is the consequence of weak pelvic floor muscles.

Incontinence can be treated in a number of ways, including exercises, medication and surgery.
7. I hurt myself quite by accident - My anterior cruciate ligament! To the doc I must go, But say, do you know? Which part of my body is relevant?

Answer: knee

A pivotal hinge joint, the knee is put under enormous stress each day just during the course of normal activity. Comprised of bones, muscles, ligaments, cartilage and bursa, pain and impairment can occur when any of the components are irritated or damaged. While athletes often suffer from such irritation or damage, a movement as simple as a stumble can cause a traumatic injury, and an ongoing condition, such as osteoarthritis, can cause pain and weakness to the point of disability.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the two major stabilizing ligaments, and if it is damaged the knee can become unstable, potentially resulting in the leg buckling. With repeated movements while the ACL is damaged, each component of the knee may be affected, including the underside of the patella which can become irritated, or damaged itself. Treatment of such an injury may be as simple as ice and rest, or as involved as surgery and physical therapy.
8. I visited my doctor this past week, He said my talocrural joint was weak! Which joint, I asked, Just might not last? Do you know the answer that I seek?

Answer: ankle

The ankle is comprised of three joints, the inferior tibiofibular joint, the subtalar joint and the talocrural joint. Ligaments provide stabilization, while muscles and tendons enable movement, and cartilage provides cushioning in the joints. The talocrural joint is a hinge joint which connects the tibia and fibula to the talus.

Ankle sprains and fractures are fairly common sports injuries, and ongoing problems such as tendonitis or osteoarthritis can decrease the ankle's mobility and stability. Treatment of such injuries or problems can include taping, splinting, casting, corticosteroid injections, therapy and surgery.
9. I think I may have a case of gout, I do not have much of a doubt. My hallux pains me, And a doc I must see! But what should I ask him about?

Answer: big toe

Like the thumb, the big toe does not have a middle phalange. The big toe, or hallux, usually has two sesamoid bones and two phalanx bones. The base of the big toe, the metatarsophalangeal or MTP joint, is the most common site for arthritis in the foot.

The hallux valgus, or bunion, occurs at the MTP joint - which is also where gout commonly affects the foot. Known as podagra, the inflammatory arthritis is caused by high amounts of uric acid in the bloodstream. As the acids crystallize, they settle around joints and tendons, causing redness, heat and pain.

There are a number of possible causes for gout, but changes in diet, lifestyle and appropriate medications can alleviate the symptoms and lessen the likelihood of further attacks.
10. My heel is just making me moan! I think it's called the talus bone. But can you tell me, Anatomically, Is that the name by which it is known?

Answer: No

The calcaneus is the heel bone. The talus, which is the ankle bone, is located above and to the front of the calcaneus. The joint between the calcaneus and the talus is called the subtalar or talocalcaneal joint. The calcaneus is the foot's largest bone, and subject to impact-related injuries such as fractures and bone spurs, and ligament problems such as plantar fasciitis.

And, if you ever fracture your calcaneus by leaping out of a window and landing on your feet, you can tell your friends you have a Don Juan fracture!
