Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the average daily production of gastric or stomach acid? To give you a metric reference, a can of soft drink contains 0.355 liters.

Answer: 1.5 liters

When all the liquids taken in are counted, the small intestine receives 6-12 liters of fluid per day. Fortunately, most by far is reabsorbed.
2. The brain contains cavities through which fluid flows.

Answer: True

The brain contains four ventricles, which are cavities and passageways for the cerebrospinal fluid. Blockage of this flow can lead to hydrocephalus, or "water on the brain".
3. What is the role of the gallbladder?

Answer: stores bile and contracts to expel bile into the intestine

Pain results when the gallbladder contracts if stones are present. A fatty meal stimulates contraction, since bile aids in the handling of fats.
4. Which of the following is(are) present in both sexes?

Answer: gonads

Both testicles and ovaries are termed gonads. Men have testes, and women have a uterus and fallopian tubes. The cervix is the neck of the uterus.
5. The lungs are attached to the inside of the chest wall.

Answer: False

The lungs expand because there is a vacuum between them and the chest wall, similar to a suction cup on a window. That is why when air is introduced between the lung and chest wall the lung collapses, a "pneumothorax".
6. Why is it normally impossible for healthy adults to breathe and swallow at the same time?

Answer: the epiglottis covers the trachea so food bypasses the windpipe.

When the epiglottis is dysfunctional due to damage or stroke, one can aspirate food into the lungs and get aspiration pneumonia.
7. Which of the following organs almost always has to be removed if cut accidentally during surgery?

Answer: spleen

The tissue is so flimsy that a stitch, when tied, rips right through the tissue. The artery is most often tied off and the spleen removed.
8. The pancreas produces enzymes which digest which of the following?

Answer: all of these

The pancreas produces lipases for fats, proteases for protein, and amylase for carbohydrates.
9. Saliva contains enzymes which aid in digestion.

Answer: True

Salivary amylase helps digest carbohydrates. If you chew bread for a long time, the increasing sweetness is the result of the amylase action on complex sugars. Saliva also contains antibodies, which prevent disease of teeth and membranes in the mouth.
10. Which of the following organs is not within the peritoneal cavity?

Answer: kidneys

The kidneys are retroperitoneal structures, meaning behind the peritoneum. Some define the limits of the abdominal cavity by the peritoneal membrane and exclude the kidneys from the abdomen, and others define the limits of the abdominal cavity by the surrounding musculature. That's also why many surgeries approach the kidneys from the back.
