Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The biggest star known to man is VY Canis Majoris, but what type of star is it?

Answer: Red Hypergiant

VY Canis Majoris is so big that in a comparison to the Sun part of the picture had to be enlarged and even then it was hard to see it. A hypergiant is normally red but rare yellow and blue ones have also been found.
2. How many moons of Pluto had been discovered by the end of 2012?

Answer: 5

Their names are Styx, Charon, Hydra, Kerberos and Nix. Charon was observed in 1978 while the other four were discovered via the Hubble Space Telescope.
3. What is the largest planet in our solar system?

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter is a gaseous and stormy planet. One storm that has been going on for years, and looks like a big red dot on Jupiter, could fit six Earths in it.
4. What is the Plough?

Answer: An asterism

A constellation is part of an asterism; e.g. the constellation of the Plough is Ursa Major.
5. What is the galaxy called that Earth is located in?

Answer: Milky Way

The Milky Way contains millions of planets, stars and a few solar systems. Our own solar system consists of eight planets: Venus, Mercury, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There is also one main star, the Sun, and two dwarf planets, Pluto and Eris, had been named by the end of the twentieth century.
6. What living creature(s) were the first to be intentionally sent into space?

Answer: Fruit flies

The dog was the first animal to have been in orbit in space but the fruit flies went up in February 1947 and Laika the dog went in 1957.
7. What name is given to a piece of floating debris or rock in space?

Answer: An asteroid

Asteroids are made up of rock and metal and are classed as minor planets. Larger asteroids are called planetoids. There is an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
8. What do you call a frozen mass of dust, ice, carbon dioxide, ammonia and methane, with the appearance of being on fire, that orbits the sun?

Answer: Comet

The difference between a comet and an asteroid is that an asteroid is made of rock and metal. A meteor is a small rock that enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up. A shooting star is just another name for a meteor.
9. What word describes the time when an object in the sky is blocked out by another object or the Earth's shadow?

Answer: Eclipse

A solar eclipse is when the Sun is blocked out by the moon and a lunar eclipse is when the moon is darkened by the Earth's shadow.

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong are famous for landing on the Moon in July 1969 as part of the Apollo program. Their spacecraft was Apollo 11. Their lunar module landed in a different area of the moon from that planned due to computer problems.
