Not So Familiar Computing Terms Quiz

You know all about CPU's and motherboards and inkjet nozzles and modems (you do, don't you?). This quiz has to do with more obscure terminolgy applied to computing hardware and software. I encountered all of these in the 3/2/04 issue of PC Magazine.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which device has a "platen?"

Answer: scanner

It's an old term from printing presses--the flat plate with which paper is pressed against inked, raised-face type. The term is now used in reference to the flat window on which you place the item you want to scan.
2. For which of the things you produce with your computer system might you be concerned about "kerning?"

Answer: text output

The variable spacing used between printed characters, such as how an 'i' tucks correctly next to a 'T', is kerning. Something printed with constant spacing between letters just doesn't look right, especially for high-quality materials like advertisements, or maybe your wedding invitations.
3. Which device you bought for your computer has a "bezel?"

Answer: monitor

It's the frame, usually with sloping faces, that surrounds and masks the edges of the picture tube or LCD screen.
4. For which product might you create a "schema?"

Answer: database

The outline of the entries that make up a database is its "schema." Often it's more than just an outline, it's the definition of all relationships and data entry formats.
5. You're working with a digital photograph, and you want to remove Dad's ugly shoes from the bottom of the image before you make a nice print. So you take that image into a photo editor and ______ it.

Answer: crop

"Corn" fits, too--but makes no sense.
6. For which activity might you employ a "monopod?"

Answer: taking a digital picture

It's a one-legged support--same as a tripod, less two legs.
7. Your computer has a toasted "chipset." Which of these is a quick fix?

Answer: there is no quick fix

Various computer function boards have integrated circuits built into a "chipset" with a processor of some kind; the chipset that every computer has is the one that directs electronic traffic on the motherboard. If it really is toast, there ain't gonna be no computing done. (Sorry, English-language purists.)
8. What in or on your computer would you want to be "rendered?"

Answer: the image on the display

Rendering of a graphical image involves producing (computing) high quality photo-realistic images with accurate reflections, refraction, transparency, shadows, and textures. (That auction troll deserves rendering, for sure, but I'm not accepting that answer.)
9. What is all that unwanted, unsolicited junk mail in your e-mail inbox called?

Answer: spam

Real canned Spam: good stuff. Internet spam: bad, bad, bad!
10. One of those many tiny dots of colored light that make up a digitized image is a ______.

Answer: pixel

This is so terms like "megapixel" and "Pixar Studios" will actually mean something.
