Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was a medium-sized early Ankylosaur with very distinctive armour. My name means "Many spikes" and I lived in southern England during the Barremian stage of the early Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Polacanthus

Named by John Whitaker Hulke in 1881, the armour of Polacanthus consisted of a series of spikes on the neck and back, a compressed mass of bone over the hips and thin, sharp spikes along each side of the tail.

The other animals listed were also early Ankylosaurs. Shamosaurus means "Lizard from Shamo", Minmi was named after the place where it was found (Minmi Crossing, Queensland, Australia) and Gastonia was named after its discoverer, Robert Gaston.
2. Who am I? I lived in China during the Barremian stage of the early Cretaceous period. I was a tiny insectivorous mammal with a name meaning "Dawn mother".

Answer: Eomaia

Named by a team of Chinese palaeontologists in 2002, Eomaia may be one of the earliest placental mammals, predating all others of this group by around forty million years. It was probably nocturnal, hunting insects in the branches of trees and bushes.

The other animals were also early mammals. Sinodelphys means "Chinese opossum", Repenomamus means "Reptile mammal" and Fruitafossor means "Fruita digger".
3. Who am I? I was a turtle, the largest ever discovered, and I shared the oceans with Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurs. My name means "Ruling turtle" and I lived in the USA during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Archelon

Named by G. R. Wieland in 1896, the largest known Archelon fossil measures over four metres long and almost five metres wide. Like that of the modern Leatherback turtle, the shell of Archelon wasn't solid bone. Instead, it consisted of an open framework covered with skin.

The other animals listed were also turtles. Araripemys means "Turtle from Araripe", Calcarichelys means "Limy turtle" and Stygiochelys means "Turtle from the river of Hell".
4. Who am I? My name means "Early skin". I lived in the USA from the Albian stage of the early Cretaceous to the Cenomanian stage of the late Cretaceous period. I was a small lizard, a distant relative of the modern Gila monster.

Answer: Primaderma

Named by R. L. Nydam in 2000, Primaderma is known only from jaw fragments. While its modern relatives are poisonous, it's very difficult to tell whether or not Primaderma was the same.

Of the other animals listed, one (Champsosaurus) was crocodile-like and two (Sineamphisbaena and Polyglyphanodon) were lizards. Sineamphisbaena means "Chinese amphibanean", Champsosaurus means "Field lizard" and Polyglyphanodon means "Much ornamented teeth".
5. I was an early snake. I had a pair of legs that were so tiny I couldn't use them to walk. I lived in Lebanon during the Cenomanian stage of the late Cretaceous period and my name means "True footed snake". Who am I?

Answer: Eupodophis

Named by J. C. Rage and F. Escuillie in 2000, Eupodophis is known from a relatively well-preserved specimen consisting of the skull, vertebrae, hips and hind legs. Several hind-legged snakes are known from this area, so it seems that the shallow seas of the late Cretaceous were where snakes first evolved.

The other animals listed were lizards. Opetiosaurus means "Awl-toothed lizard", Dolichosaurus means "Thin lizard" and Pontosaurus means "Sea lizard".
6. I was a large marine reptile with a name meaning "Swollen lizard". I lived in Canada and the USA during the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Tylosaurus

Tylosaurus was named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1869.

When the Ichthyosaurs became extinct at the beginning of the Cretaceous, their place was taken by the Mosasaurs. One of the largest was Tylosaurus, first discovered in western Kansas, USA, in 1869. We know Tylosaurus fed on other marine reptiles because a specimen found in 1918 had the bones of a Plesiosaur in the stomach region.

The other animals listed were also Mosasaurs. Platecarpus means "Flat wrist", Clidastes means "Locked up" and Globidens means "Bulbous teeth".
7. I lived in Africa during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the late Cretaceous period. I was a marine reptile and my name means "Many teeth". Who am I?

Answer: Pluridens

Named by T. Lingham-Soliar in 1998, Pluridens was a large Mosasaur known only from a lower jaw. It's assumed to have eaten Ammonites (ancient relatives of the modern squid) and other swimming molluscs.

The other animals listed were also Mosasaurs. Prognathodon means "Forward jaw tooth", Taniwhasaurus means "Water monster lizard" and Goronyosaurus means "Goronyo lizard".
8. Who am I? I was one of the largest Plesiosaurs, with my neck making up roughly half of my total body length. My name means "Thin plate lizard" and I lived in the USA during the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Elasmosaurus

The human neck has only seven vertebrae, so imagine having a neck containing seventy-two!

When Edward Drinker Cope reconstructed the skeleton of Elasmosaurus in March 1868, he made one major mistake: he put its head on the end of its tail! When his rival Othniel Charles Marsh pointed out this mistake, it sparked the so-called "Bone Wars" in which the two tried to outdo each other in the number of fossils discovered. Their efforts led to the discovery of 136 new species (Marsh discovered eighty while Cope discovered fifty-six).

Of the other animals listed, one is a Plesiosaur and two are Pliosaurs. Dolichorhynchops means "Long-snouted face", Hydrotherosaurus means "Water beast lizard" and Kronosaurus means "Kronos's lizard".
9. Who am I? I lived in Canada during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period. I was a large Plesiosaur with a name meaning "Last swimmer".

Answer: Terminonatator

Named by Tamaki Sato in 2003, Terminonatator is known from the single, partial skeleton of a young adult. One of the last Plesiosaurs, it had curved interlocking teeth that formed a trap for catching fish.

Of the other animals listed, one (Aristonectes) was a Plesiosaur and two (Trinacromerum and Brachauchenius) were Pliosaurs. Trinacromerum means "Three-tipped femur", Aristonectes means "Best swimmer" and Brachauchenius means "Short neck".
10. Who am I? I was a gigantic crocodilian, one of the largest ever known, so it's probably no surprise that my name means "Terrible crocodile". I lived in the USA during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Deinosuchus

Deinosuchus was named by Edwin Colbert and Roland Bird in 1958.

When crocodiles first appeared in the late Triassic, they were very small, often measuring no more than twenty inches long and feeding mostly on small fish or insects. Fast forward a few million years to the late Cretaceous, and the rivers of the landmass that will become North America are home to Deinosuchus, a crocodile so big it hunted Hadrosaurs.

The other animals listed were also crocodiles. Dyrosaurus means "Evil lizard", Brachychampsa means "Short alligator" and Stomatosuchus means "Porous crocodile".
11. My name means "Bog lizard". I was a small terrestrial crocodile and I lived in South America during the Cenomanian and Campanian stages of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Sphagesaurus

Named by Llewellyn Ivor Price in 1950, Sphagesaurus is known only from its skull. Its jaws are short with teeth of different shapes spread out all along. A palate in the roof of the mouth separated the air passage from the feeding area which allowed the animal to breathe and chew at the same time.

The other animals listed were also terrestrial crocodiles. Simosuchus means "Pug-nosed crocodile", Baurusuchus means "Crocodile from Bauru" and Libycosuchus means "Crocodile from Libya".
12. I was one of the largest Pterosaurs and also one of the most well-known. I lived in the USA during the Santonian and Campanian stages of the late Cretaceous period and my name means "Winged and toothless". Who am I?

Answer: Pteranodon

Named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1876 from a collection of wing-bone fragments found in Kansas, USA, in 1870, Pteranodon was once regarded as being the largest animal that was capable of flight (until the discoveries of Quetzalcoatlus in the 1970s and Hatzegopteryx in 2002). The most obvious feature of Pteranodon was the crest on its head. The crest varied in size and shape depending on gender, age and species. Males had larger crests than females.

The other animals listed were also Pterosaurs. Zhejiangopterus means "Wing from Zhejiang Province", Nyctosaurus means "Night lizard" and Quetzalcoatlus was named after an Aztec god.
13. I lived in France during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period. I was a large Theropod dinosaur and my name means "Dragon lizard". Who am I?

Answer: Tarascosaurus

Named by Jean Le Loeuff and Eric Buffetaut in 1991, Tarascosaurus is known from nothing more than two vertebrae and a leg bone. It belonged to a group of Theropods called Abelisaurids.

The other animals listed were also Abelisaurids. Masiakasaurus means "Vicious lizard", Abelisaurus means "Abel's lizard" and Noasaurus means "North-west Argentine lizard".
14. Who am I? I was a large Theropod dinosaur with two horns sticking out sideways from above my eyes. My name means "Meat-eating bull" and I lived in South America during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Carnotaurus

Named by Jose Bonaparte in 1985, Carnotaurus is known from an almost complete skeleton which includes fragments of its skin. Besides the horns, its most obvious feature are its tiny arms, even shorter than those of Tyrannosaurus.

The other animals listed were also Theropods. Rugops means "Wrinkled face", Majungasaurus means "Majunga lizard" and Aucasaurus means "Lizard from Auca Mahuevo".
15. Who am I? My name means "White shark-toothed lizard". I was one of the largest known Theropod dinosaurs and I lived in Africa from the Albian stage of the early Cretaceous to the Cenomanian stage of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Carcharodontosaurus

Named by Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach in 1931, Carcharodontosaurus got its name because its teeth resemble those of the Great White shark. The original specimen found in the 1920s was lost when an air raid destroyed the German museum where it was housed. Fifty years later, new specimens were found in Morocco.

The other animals listed were also Theropods. Deltadromeus means "Delta runner", Giganotosaurus means "Giant southern lizard" and Mapusaurus means "Earth lizard".
16. Who am I? I was a small Theropod with a name meaning "Wounding tooth". For my body size, I had a very large brain. I lived in Canada and the USA during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Troodon

Named by Joseph Leidy in 1856, Troodon is known from several specimens. Due to its large brain, Troodon may well have been the most intelligent dinosaur (though palaeontologists can't be certain).

The other animals listed were also small Theropods. Saurornithoides means "Bird-like lizard", Byronosaurus means "Byron lizard" and Borogovia means "From Borogove".
17. I lived in Mongolia during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the late Cretaceous period. I was an Ornithomimosaur and my name means "Goose mimic". Who am I?

Answer: Anserimimus

Anserimimus was named by Rinchen Barsbold in 1988.

The Ornithomimosaurs looked similar to modern, ground-living birds such as Emus and Ostriches (only without wings). They had small heads with toothless jaws, lock necks and strong running legs. Anserimimus is known from a partial skeleton discovered in Mongolia in the late 1970s.

The other animals listed were also Ornithomimosaurs. Archaeornithomimus means "Ancient bird mimic", Garudimimus means "Garuda mimic" and Gallimimus means "Hen mimic".
18. I've been something of a mystery for almost fifty years because all that palaeontologists had to work with were my enormous eight-foot-long arms. My name means "Terrible hand" and I lived in Mongolia during the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Deinocheirus

Deinocheirus was named by Ewa Roniewicz and Halszka Osmolska in 1970.

The first remains of Deinocheirus, the largest known Ornithomimosaur, were discovered by Richen Barsbold and Zofia Kielen-Jaworowska in Mongolia in July 1965. The specimen consisted of a handful of ribs and vertebrae along with a pair of massive arms. In 2013, two partial skeletons were discovered (the missing bones are believed to have been stolen by poachers). We're now starting to get a better idea of what Deinocheirus looked like.

The other animals listed were also Ornithomimosaurs Struthiomimus means "Ostrich mimic", Ornithomimus means "Bird mimic" and Dromiceiomimus means "Emu mimic".
19. I was named for a crime I never committed. A small Theropod, rather than having lots of teeth, I had only two, situated on the roof of my mouth. I lived in Mongolia during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Oviraptor

Oviraptor was named by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924.

Oviraptor means "Egg thief". When its remains were first discovered in the early 1920s, they were lying beside a nest of fossilized eggs which palaeontologists first thought belonged to the small Ceratopsian, Protoceratops. However, the eggs contained no embryos. Then, in the 1990s, an identical nest was found....with an Oviraptor sitting on it! So it seems that, rather than stealing someone else's eggs, the original Oviraptor was actually guarding its own nest.

The other animals listed were also Oviraptorids. Chirostenotes means "Slim hand", Khaan means "Lord" and Nomingia was named after a part of Mongolia's Gobi Desert where it was found.
20. Who am I? I lived in the USA during the Turonian stage of the late Cretaceous period. My name means "Sloth claw" and I belonged to a rare group of dinosaurs called Therizinosaurs.

Answer: Nothronychus

Named by James Kirkland and Douglas G. Wolfe in 2001, Nothronychus is the first Therizinosaur to be discovered outside Asia. It's known from two partial skeletons. Although classed as Theropods, Therizinosaurs are believed to have been vegetarians, using their large claws to rip branches off trees.

The other animals listed were also Therizinosaurs. Segnosaurus means "Slow lizard", Neimongosaurus means "Lizard from Nei Mongol" and Therizinosaurus means "Scythe lizard".
21. Who am I? I was a peculiar little dinosaur. While the majority of Theropods had hands, I didn't. Instead, where my hands should have been, I had nothing more than one large claw, hence my name which means "Single claw". I lived in Mongolia during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period.

Answer: Mononykus

Mononykus was named by M. A. Norell, L. M. Chiappe, A. Perle and J. M. Clark in 1993.

The most distinctive feature of the Alvarezsaurids were their arms, which were quite short and ended in nothing more than one claw. This has led some palaeontologists to suggest that these dinosaurs had a very specialized lifestyle, using their huge claws for digging into the mounds of termites and other colonial insects, like modern anteaters.

The other animals listed were also Alvarezsaurids. Patagonykus means "Patagonian claw", Shuvuuia means "Bird" and Alvarezsaurus means "Alvarez's lizard".
22. Who am I? I lived in the USA during the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period. I was a flightless sea bird with a lifestyle similar to that of a modern penguin. My name means "Western bird".

Answer: Hesperornis

Named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1872, there are nine known Hesperornis species. Unlike penguins, which have wings (although they're not used for flight), Hesperornis was completely wingless. It had large feet and legs that stuck out sideways to help it swim.

The other animals listed were also birds, though one (Yandangornis) looked more like a dinosaur. Ichthyornis means "Fish bird", Rahonavis means "Cloud menace bird" and Yandangornis means "Bird from Yandang Mountain".
23. My name means "Patagonian wing". I was a small flightless bird and I lived in South America during the Santonian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Patagopteryx

Named by H. M. F. Alvarenga and Jose Bonaparte in 1992, Patagopteryx is known from a single partial skeleton. Although it couldn't fly, its bones show a clear indication that it evolved from flying birds.

The other animals listed were also birds. Vegavis means "Bird from Vega Island", Teviornis means "Tereschenko's bird" (after Russian palaeontologist, Victor Tereschenko) and Gargantuavis means "Giant bird".
24. I was a small Dromaeosaur. My name, meaning "Fire thief", comes from the fact that my fossils were found in an area where rocks had been cleared of vegetation after a forest fire. I lived in France during the Campanian and Maastrichtian stages of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Pyroraptor

Named by Allain and Tarquet in 2000, Pyroraptor is known from a single specimen discovered in southern France in 1992. The specimen consists of teeth, limb bones, a handful of vertebrae and the characteristic killing claws of the feet.

The other animals listed were also Dromaeosaurs. Bambiraptor means "Baby hunter", Adasaurus means "Ada's lizard" and Variraptor means "Var thief".
25. Though I was already quite well known, my appearance in 'Jurassic Park' made me even more famous (though I'm somewhat smaller than the movie version). I was a Dromaeosaur with a name meaning "Fast thief" and I lived in China, Mongolia and Russia during the Campanian stage of the late Cretaceous period. Who am I?

Answer: Velociraptor

Named by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924, Velociraptor is probably the best-known Dromaeosaur. A famous fossil, found in Mongolia in 1971, consists of a Velociraptor wrapped around the skeleton of a Protoceratops. It's believed both animals died when a sand dune collapsed on them.

The other animals listed were also Dromaeosaurs. Saurornitholestes means "Lizard bird thief", Dromaeosaurus means "Running lizard" and Unenlagia means "Half bird".
