Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How far is our solar system away from the nearest bright star cluster?

Answer: 150 light years

The nearest bright star cluster to the Sun is the Hyades about 150 light years away. The Hyades form the bull's head in the constellation "Taurus".
2. What stage of its life is our Sun in now?

Answer: Main Sequence

The Sun will be in the main sequence stage for another 5,000 million years.
3. What stellar classification is the Sun given?

Answer: G dwarf star

By the standards of space, the Sun is very small. Astronomers refer to it as a type G dwarf star.
4. What is the Sun's apparent magnitude?

Answer: -26.7

Apparent magnitude is how bright a star seems in the sky, not taking account how much light energy it gives out. As the Sun is very close to earth (only 93,000,000 miles away)it has a much lower apparent magnitude (lower is brighter).
5. The Sun has a large enough mass to supernova when it "dies"?

Answer: False

The Sun is not big enough to supernova when it runs out of fuel, it will only expand to a red giant, then throw off layers of its mass and become a white dwarf.
6. Each of the gas giants in our solar system has a ring system.

Answer: True

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have ring systems. Saturn has the most well known.
7. How much of the solar system's mass does the Sun contain?

Answer: Over 99%

The Sun does not have the volume of 99% of the solar system but is more dense and so has more than 99% of the mass.
8. Which of these named features of the solar system is the outermost?

Answer: Oort cloud

The Oort cloud is thought to be an immense spherical cloud of comets around the solar system. It is hypothesized to be about 1 light year (50,000 AU) in diameter while none of the other features extends beyond 200 AU.
9. Name the four inner planets in alphabetical order (without commas, just spaces in between each).

Answer: Earth Mars Mercury Venus

10. There are ten confirmed planets in the solar system.

Answer: False

There are only 9, a "Planet X" has been discovered but it is thought that it was only a large asteroid and is not therefore confirmed as a planet.
11. Which of Mars's ice caps is biggest?

Answer: Northern

The northern polar cap measures around 1100 km (680 miles) while the southern is about 420 km or 260 miles across.
12. Which planet is 149.6 million kilometres from the Sun?

Answer: Earth

At 93 million miles or 149.6 million kilometres, the Earth is the third planet from the Sun.
13. On the surface of which of the following four bodies would you be able to see a moon all of the time?

Answer: Pluto

Pluto's moon, Charon, can only be seen from one side of Pluto, the other side can never see it. This is because Charon orbits Pluto at the same rate as one day on Pluto.
14. Which planet shares an orbit with two groups of asteroids, known as the Trojan Asteroids?

Answer: Jupiter

Trojan asteroids are co-orbital with Jupiter, held in place with Jupiters high gravity.
15. Name the planet which orbits the Sun on its side to give an effect that it is rolling along its orbit.

Answer: Uranus

Uranus' tilt creates extremely long seasons (One season lasts 1/4 of it`s orbital period - 84 Earth years).
