Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chemistry - Which of the following is the major difference between a compound and a molecule?

Answer: A compound always contains multiple elements

A compound is made up of two or more different elements. A molecule, on the other hand, is formed by the combination of multiple atoms of the same element (e.g. - a hydrogen molecule has two). A molecule can also be made up of different types of elements.
2. From a meteorological viewpoint, what is the fundamental factor in determining the difference between a snowstorm and a blizzard?

Answer: Wind

A blizzard is essentially a snowstorm that has strong winds. While there is some subjectivity around how strong the wind needs to be, it is generally accepted that a blizzard becomes a blizzard when winds are particularly strong. This often results in larger volumes of snow than an average winter snowstorm.
3. It is well known that humans and chimpanzees share a large proportion of DNA. But do we have the same number of chromosomes?

Answer: No

Chimps have 48 chromosomes; two more (i.e. one more pair) than humans. The human brain is perhaps the most major difference, being about 4 times the volume of a chimp's. It is thought that along with the number of additional connections we have in our brains, the size of the frontal lobe is what makes humans capable of significantly more brain activity, including abstract thought.

While it is often quoted that humans and chimps share 99 per cent in terms of DNA, some experts are now beginning to suggest it's more like 95 per cent.
4. While practice can vary somewhat, which of these is a major difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

Answer: Ability to prescribe drugs

Both professions work directly with people and this naturally involves discussing personal information. While they require different qualifications, they both do need them. Psychiatrists require medical training, while psychologists generally require psychology qualifications.

As a general rule, psychologists do not tend to prescribe medications, while psychiatrists can and often do. This is changing in some places (e.g. some US states) but remains the case in most countries.
5. From a scientific perspective, is there a difference between heat and temperature?

Answer: Yes: they measure different concepts

The key to the heat/temperature issue is energy. Heat is a measurement of energy transfer between bodies. Temperature simply measures how fast the atoms are moving in a given body.
6. The words weather and climate express similar ideas, but are they interchangeable?

Answer: No

Basically, weather is limited to short-term observations, while climate takes longer-term patterns into account. This is the fundamental difference between meteorology (weather forecasting and analysis) and climatology (analysis of climate).
7. When discussing a lunar or a solar eclipse, what does the 'lunar' (moon) and 'solar' (sun) refer to?

Answer: The object that is blocked from view

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon is obscured from view, because the Earth lies between the Sun and the Moon. In contrast, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon lies between the Sun and Earth, blocking (partially or occasionally fully) the view of the Sun.

Another major difference is how long they last: lunar eclipses often last for hours; solar eclipses are usually over within minutes.
8. In statistical terms, what is true about the difference between accuracy and precision?

Answer: Precision is about consistency

This difference is often explained through the analogy of a dart board. Accuracy is about aiming for, and hitting close to, the bullseye. But precision is about consistently landing your multiple darts in the same spot.
9. Centrifugal force and centripetal force refer to exactly the same concept in physics.

Answer: False

They are very similar, but not exactly the same. Centrifugal force is the tendency of an object following a curved path to fly away from the center of curvature (in other words, a type of inertia). The centripetal force is the force that keeps an object moving along a circular path. So only the centripetal force is actually a 'force' in the literal sense.
10. Finally let's look at botany. Botanically speaking, what is the distinguishing factor between a fruit and a vegetable?

Answer: The edible part has seeds

This is a very simple one: the parts of fruit plants that we eat have seeds, while what we call vegetables do not. There are many fruits that are eaten like vegetables (e.g. tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant) but botanically they are technically fruits due to the presence of seeds within their edible components. Fruits are also generally characterised by a sweet taste, while vegetables often have neutral tastes to them.
