Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you were told to take medication PRN, when would you take it?

Answer: as needed

PRN actually stands for "pro re nata" in Latin, or in other words, as needed.
2. On your medication label, it says to take your pills AC, so when do you take your medication?

Answer: before meals

AC in Latin terms translates to "ante cibum". If you see PC on a medication label that would stand for "after meals".
3. What is the abbreviation for bedtime (or at bedtime)?

Answer: HS

HS stands for "hour of sleep".
4. A patient has an NPO order, so that means what?

Answer: nothing by mouth

An NPO (nil per os - the Latin for 'nothing by mouth') order by a doctor might be given to a patient if he or she will be having a surgery. Usually a patient might be NPO for 12 hours or so before surgery.
5. If the doctor gives an order to do ROM, what is he telling you to do for the patient?

Answer: range of motion

There are different range of motion exercises that can be done, but often they are used to strengthen certain parts of the body. For example someone who broke a hip and has not been able to walk for sometime may do range of motion exercises on their legs.
6. How often would you take a medication prescribed as TID?

Answer: three times a day

two and three times a day or often confused with one another. The easiest way to remember the difference is in TID, the "T' is telling you "tri", or three times a day. In BID (twice a day), the "B" tells you "bi", or two times a day.
7. A urinary tract infection is also known as a UTI.

Answer: true

UTIs are especially common in patients in nursing homes. Symptoms include cloudy or bloody urine, not urinating enough, or urinating too frequently, and often the patient may seem disoriented and not like their normal self.
8. The doctor recommends that the patient should stay in hospital, however the patient decides to leave anyway. On their chart the doctor records AMA. What does AMA stand for?

Answer: against medical advice

This could also be abbreviated DAMA, or discharged against medical advice. When patients leave AMA, they are required to sign a form acknowledging this.
9. If a patient has congestive heart failure, what abbreviation do they suffer from?

Answer: CHF

CHF is when the heart cannot pump enough blood throughout the body. An echocardiogram is often the best test used to see if a patient has heart failure.
10. IV stands for intradermal.

Answer: false

IV stands for intravenous, this is when liquid substances are pumped through the vein. Intravenous means "within the vein".
