1. Titanium is a light-weight metal, being about half as dense as copper. What is its density, anyway?

Answer: 4.5 grams per cc

The density of copper is a little less than 9 g per cc. Although Ti is light weight, it's much stronger compared to aluminium. Thus the metal is priced for its high 'strength to weight ratio'. Alloyed with aluminium it is used to make aircraft parts. It is also used to make military hardwares, sometimes alloyed with tungsten.

Answer: Resistance to corrosion

Titanium is remarkably resistant to corrosion. Iron starts rusting and copper turns greenish when exposed to moist air. This is not the case with Ti. So it is used in chemical industries and in chemical plants to make storage tanks. It is also used in surgical implants because of its non-toxicity and unreactivity. Because of its high melting point, it is used to make jet engines and in nuclear reactors.

It is true! An Englishman known as William Gregor isolated a new metallic oxide in 1790, but didn't name the metal. The metal was named in 1795 by a Hungarian - Martin Klaproth. He named it as 'Titanium' after the Greek mythological figures, the Titans. But it was only in 1910 that the metal was obtained! That year, Matthew Hunter isolated the metal from its chloride.
4. Titanium is mostly obtained from its chief ore - rutile. In what form does Ti exist in this ore?

Answer: Titanium Dioxide

Rutile is concentrated to increase the percentage of TiO2. Then it is crushed and mixed with carbon and heated to around 800 degree Celsius (1400 degree Fahrenheit) in a special type of furnace. Chlorine is passed through the furnace and TiCl4 is obtained.

This is then reduced using Magnesium or similar elements. The metal obtained is called 'Sponge Titanium' and is then purifed by a special electro-thermo-chemical process called the 'Van Arkel Process'.

Obviously, it is because of its properties and uses. Titanium is not very shiny. Nor is it rare and expensive. On the contrary, it is the seventh most abundant metal in the crust. At present though, it is somewhat costly. But the extraction technology is improving and Ti's price is bound to reduce so that it becomes as common a metal as iron and aluminium.
