Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All right, we'll begin with types of vision problems. What is the effect of myopia?

Answer: You can see things up close, but not far away

Myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness, affects 30% of all Americans. When this happens, the image of a distant object is focused in front of the retina. Because of this, things far away seem blurry without glasses.
2. What is the effect of hyperopia?

Answer: You can see things far away, but not up close

You probably know hyperopia as farsightedness. It could also be called hypermetropia, and the Brits call it longsightedness. Whatever you call it, it affects 5 to 10% of Americans, and close objects are focused behind the retina, unlike myopia. If you have this, things up close seem blurry without glasses.
3. Imagine that you saw the following people on the street, and all of them were wearing glasses. Which one of them is MOST likely to be wearing bifocals?

Answer: A person with both nearsightedness and farsightedness

Bifocals, invented by Ben Franklin in 1784, have a lens for seeing far away on the top and a lens for seeing up close on the bottom. Old people wear them more often than younger ones. About the little kid answer, there are glasses with spring hinges so that little kids won't be able to break them if they bend them too far.

A person can be both nearsighted and farsighted if they have astigmatism, in which the cornea is irregularly shaped.
4. Which of the following can cause you to need glasses?

Answer: Old age

Despite popular belief, reading small print and sitting too close to the computer won't make your vision any worse. Old age, however, is a major factor in bad vision.
5. When did the myth that carrots help your eyesight pop up?

Answer: World War II

In World War II, the British invented radar so they could detect German planes as they flew to attack, and to keep the Germans from knowing, they claimed that carrots did the trick.
6. From which country does the first written mention of eyeglasses in Europe come?

Answer: Italy

In Italy, in the year 1284, history has it that Salvino D'Armate is the first person to come up with the idea of glasses.
7. We know a lot about vision problems today, obviously. But apparently we didn't know a lot a long time ago. What did sailors use to believe cured vision problems?

Answer: Wearing a golden earring

Pirates are often depicted wearing golden earrings. Maybe this is why!
8. Which of these is the best way to clean the lenses of glasses?

Answer: Washing them with soap and water

Wiping your glasses with your shirt is not recommended because your shirt has dust particles which will scratch the lens. Wiping them with a tissue, paper, or any product that comes from trees is also not recommended because it will scratch your lens. Vinegar, as well as ammonia, will cause the coating on your lenses to strip away.

However, if you're cleaning drinking glasses, vinegar will work really well.
9. In late 20th and early 21st century North America, what were the two most common materials used for eyeglass frames?

Answer: Plastic or metal

Those are the common materials, but frames are sometimes made from wood, gold, and even bone and buffalo horn.
10. Which of the following inventions was used in medieval Europe to help vision - before glasses came about?

Answer: A reading stone

A reading stone was a glass sphere that you put on your reading to make the letters bigger.
