Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these describes an x-ray?

Answer: An x-ray is a way to see inside the body.

X-rays are used in numerous ways. Not only are x-rays used in hospitals and clinics but they are also used by airports, the police and to check for weak spots in metal.
2. I just slipped and fell down the stairs. My ankle is bruised and swollen. What do I do now?

Answer: Go to a physician or emergency room so a doctor can assess the injury.

Depending on what state or country you are from, only a doctor, physician's assistant, nurse or a chiropractor can order an x-ray.
3. Who discovered x-rays?

Answer: Wilhelm Roentgen

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays in 1895 and lost his fingers from overexposure to x-rays. Isaac Newton discovered gravity and Marie Curie discovered radium. Britney Spears didn't discover anything.
4. The person taking your x-ray may ask you some questions. Which question below may be asked by the x-ray tech?

Answer: Is there a chance that you could be pregnant?

X-rays can harm unborn babies, so this question must be asked of all females. You and your doctor must decide if your injury is severe enough to risk harm to your unborn child.
5. You arrive at the radiology department for your x-ray. The x-ray tech may use which of the following items during your exam?

Answer: Lead letters, numbers and shields.

X-rays cannot penetrate lead. The x-ray tech will use a lead shield to cover your vital organs and lead letters and numbers to identify the radiograph.
6. When you fell and hurt your ankle you also bumped your head. Your doctor decides to play it safe and orders a CAT scan of your head. What the heck are you going to have done now?

Answer: You are going to have a computed tomogram of your head.

Most people know C.T. or computed axial tomography as CAT scan. It's used when a more detailed look at bone and soft tissue is required. CAT scan also uses x-rays to get the pictures of your body. C.T. scanners have been around since the early 1970s.
7. Uh oh, your doctor says that a spot was seen on the CAT Scan of your brain. He says that there is probably nothing to worry about, but to be on the safe side he orders an MRI of your head. What does MRI stand for?

Answer: Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI's are an even more detailed way of looking at bones and soft tissues. X-rays are NOT used in MRI. MRI has been used in medical imaging of humans since the mid 1980's. Merck is the name of some medical manuals. Roget makes thesaurus books.
8. You head to the MRI department. The MRI tech will be asking you some questions. Which of the following are some questions that he or she may ask you?

Answer: Do you have any metal inside your body, like a pacemaker?

Remember, MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Magnetic is the key word here. If you have a pacemaker, you should not get an MRI exam unless research has been done and the pacemaker has been proven to be MRI safe. Metals, jewelry, hairpins, lighters, car keys, cell phones, some coins and much more can not safely go near a magnet used for imaging.

The MRI tech cannot ethically tell you the results of your exam. Any type of motion will ruin the images. You can breathe though.
9. The MRI tech comes in and says that they want to give you a dye to help see if anything abnormal shows up. What is a dye?

Answer: The dye or contrast is a clear liquid injected into your vein.

Dye or contrast is a clear liquid that is injected into your vein. It won't turn your skin or urine a different color. Unlike x-ray dye or contrast, the dye used in MRI does not make you feel hot all over. MRI dye is much safer than x-ray dye but there is still a very small chance that you could have an allergic reaction to it. Make sure to tell your MRI tech or doctor if you start itching, get red bumps on your skin, have swelling in your face, throat or neck or have a hard time breathing.
10. In which scientific unit are magnetic fields and x-rays measured in medical usage?

Answer: Tesla, Rads, Roentgens

Tesla measures magnetic fields and can range from 0.1T to 10T. The higher the number the stronger the magnetic field. Rads and Roentgens (there's that man who discovered x-rays again) measure x-rays.
