Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In April, 2000 the Detroit Tigers began the new millennium with a new ballpark. It replaced Tiger Stadium which had been built in 1912. What is Tiger Stadium now called?

Answer: Comerica Park

Before Tiger Stadium was built the ballpark was called Bennett Park, named for catcher Charlie Bennett who lost both his legs in a train accident. Today Comerica Park is much more than a baseball field. It houses a carousel with tigers instead of horses, a 50-foot Ferris Wheel with cars shaped like baseballs, and a huge waterfall display of fireworks for every home run scored. Comerica Park has wider seats than its predecessor, more restaurants, better clubhouse facilities and, along the left-center field wall, the names of former baseball greats like Ty Cobb and Willie Horton.
2. Known for having the best visibility for batters, which ballpark, formerly known as Royals Stadium, was constructed as part of the Truman Sports Complex?

Answer: Kauffman Stadium

Home to the Kansas City Royals since 1973, Kauffman Stadium is named for Ewing M. Kauffman who established the team. Located in Kansas City, Missouri, this ballpark was renovated in 2007 and the fans have certainly shown their appreciation by their attendance. On October 17, 1980 the Royals won their first World Series game by defeating the Phillies 4-3 in ten innings.

The victory was short-lived. They lost the Series 4-2.
3. Citizens Bank Park became the home stadium for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004. From 1887-1938 their home stadium was the ________ .

Answer: Baker Bowl

Due to its small dimensions, the Baker Bowl was a favorable ballpark for hitters. When it burned down in 1894, the structure was replaced by one made of concrete, steel, and brick. It was at the Baker Bowl in 1915 that President Woodrow Wilson made the first Presidential appearance at a World Series during Game 2.

Despite what the movie world would have you believe, the Baker Bowl was where Babe Ruth played his last game ever on May 30, 1935.
4. Gone but not forgotten, which Major League baseball park, located in Brooklyn, NY, was home to the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1957?

Answer: Ebbets Field

Built on the site of a garbage dump called Pigtown, the planners of Ebbets Field were not prepared. The park had many problems when it opened in the spring of 1913. There was no press box, no flag, no seating in left or center and no scoreboard. Ebbets Field was also very small.

It couldn't seat the crowds of fans who wanted to watch the games from the bleachers. The Dodgers eventually moved across the country to Los Angeles in 1957 and Ebbets Field was demolished in 1960.
5. Which ballpark has a retractable roof as well as a state-of-the-art cooling system? (Hint: it opened in 1998 as the D'Backs home stadium)

Answer: Chase Field

With an 8,000-ton cooling system that pumps out 1.2 million cubic feet of air per minute, temperatures inside the stadium can be lowered by 30 degrees in just three hours. Chase Field retains a touch of the past with its "keyhole," a dirt strip between home plate and the pitcher's mound which was commonly found in ballparks of old. Chase Field became home to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998, the year they joined MLB as an expansion team. Naming rights belonged to Bank One of Chicago from 1998-2005. During that time Chase Field was known as Bank One Ballpark.
6. From 1970-2002 this stadium was home to the Cincinnati Reds (replaced in 2003 by a new new home stadium - the Great American Ball Park). What was the name of the old home stadium?

Answer: Riverfront Stadium

Riverfront Stadium, demolished in 2002, was the first ballpark to have hosted both an All-Stars Game and a World Series in its inaugural season (1970). A baseball milestone occurred on April 4, 1974 when Hank Aaron hit his 714th home run, tying Babe Ruth for the all-time record.
7. The Green Monster looming at left field says it all. Just ask any Red Sox fan. Where do the Boston Red Sox play?

Answer: Fenway Park

The Green Monster is a 37-foot wall in left field that was originally covered with advertisements. At one time a sign read that the wall was 315 feet down the line but that distance was later changed to 310 feet. The foul territory at Fenway is the smallest of any Major League ballpark.
8. Minute Maid Park became the home stadium of the Houston Astros in 2000. It was called Enron Field for two seasons, 2000 and 2001. What was the name of the previous home stadium where the Astros played, from 1965-1999?

Answer: Astrodome

The Astrodome was the first covered ballpark, a great idea since Texas summers are notoriously hot and humid. The first game that was played indoors on artificial turf was the only 1-0 game in All-Star history. It was Willie Mays who scored that single run in 1968.

After 35 seasons of indoor baseball, the Astrodome hosted its last regular-season game on October 3, 1999. A retractable-roof stadium was built downtown and became known as Enron Field for 2000 and 2001 and then Minute Maid Park in 2002.
9. This ballpark has undergone many name changes over the years. Overlooking San Francisco Bay, it is quite a picturesque setting for a ballpark. In 2006 it was renamed what?

Answer: AT&T Park

It was named Pacific Bell Park when the SF Giants moved there in 2000. The San Francisco Giants were once known as the NY Giants (not to be confused with the NY Giants football team). After 1957 the team moved from New York City to San Francisco which is where they have played ever since. During the 1990s and 2000s, Barry Bonds distinguished himself as one of the team's most successful players. On October 5, 2001 Bonds broke the single-season home run record with number 71 and two days later set the new mark at 73. Also on that date the longest nine-inning game in baseball history was played. Clocking in at 4 hours 27 minutes, the LA Dodgers defeated the SF Giants 11-10.
10. This ballpark was opened in 1923 in the South Bronx, New York City. It officially closed in 2008 with a new ballpark built adjacent to it. Which of the following ballparks fits that description?

Answer: Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium is my favorite ballpark because that is where I went to ballgames as a child. The "House That Ruth Built" closed in 2008. The new stadium, built across the street from the old one, has kept many features of the original stadium. Yankee Stadium is rich in baseball history: Lou Gehrig's emotional farewell in 1939, Joe DiMaggio's historic 56-game hitting streak in 1941, and Mickey Mantle's 500th career home run on May 14, 1967.
