Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Indianapolis Colts picked which quarterback number one overall from Illinois in the 1990 NFL draft?

Answer: Jeff George

George was a versatile quarterback with many teams. He played four seasons for Indianapolis before playing for the Falcons for another three. From there it was two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota, before spending his final two seasons with the Redskins and retired in 2001.

His best season was topping the 4000-yard passing mark with 4143 along and 24 touchdowns with Atlanta in 1993. Andre Ware was the next quarterback taken in the 1990 draft, seventh overall by Houston.
2. Which nose tackle from Miami did the Dallas Cowboys pick number one overall in the 1991 draft, and kept him for five seasons before letting him go to the Raiders in 1996?

Answer: Russell Maryland

Russell made the Pro Bowl only one time in his career, and that was in 1993 as a Cowboy. He retired after 10 seasons in 2000 as a Green Bay Packer.
3. In a rather weak 1992 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected which defensive player number one overall from Washington?

Answer: Steve Emtman

The injury-riddled defensive tackle, Emtman lasted only six seasons and retired as a Redskin in 1997. Spellman of the Bears went 22nd in the first round. Amazingly enough, the NFLs future stars came outside of the first round in the 1992 draft with names such as Rod Smith, Darren Woodson, Amp Lee, and Robert Brooks.
4. The 1993 draft had a bevy of talent waiting, but it was the New England Patriots who picked which quarterback number one overall?

Answer: Drew Bledsoe

In a strange selection process, the other listed quarterbacks were the only QBs selected through seven rounds. Bledsoe came out of Washington State. He played for nine seasons as a Patriot before joining the Bills in 2002. 2006 found Drew in a Cowboy uniform. The Rams waited until the 10th pick overall to select running back Jerome Bettis.
5. The 1994 NFL draft saw Marshall Faulk and Heath Shuler sit behind which number one selection?

Answer: Dan Wilkinson

Wilkinson was selected by the Bengals from Ohio State. Dan played for multiple seasons with the Bengals, Redskins, and Lions. 2006 saw him in a Miami Dolphin uniform.
6. This 1995 first overall running back selection by the Bengals didn't last but six seasons in the NFL, and never rushed for 500 yards in a season. He retired as a New Orlean Saint in 2003. Who was this running back from Penn State?

Answer: Ki-Jana Carter

The others were all linebackers. Carter went ahead of Tony Boselli, Steve McNair, Michael Westbrook, and Kerry Collins to round out the top five. Carter's best season was in 1997 with Cincinnati, but rushed for only 464 yards.
7. The New York Jets took which wide receiver from USC number one in the 1996 draft?

Answer: Keyshawn Johnson

The others were first round running backs. Johnson had two 1000-yard receiving seasons before moving to Tampa Bay in 2000. Keyshawn was a Carolina Panther in 2006.
8. 1997 was a strange NFL draft. The top 10 picks had no running backs, no quarterbacks, and had only one wide receiver selected. Which Ohio State tackle did the Rams select number one overall?

Answer: Orlando Pace

The others were all fourth round picks. 10 seasons later, Pace still wore the number 76 in a Rams uniform. In 2005, Pace was selected to his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl. Tiki Barber went 36th overall in this 1997 draft, to the blind hindsight of many NFL teams.
9. There were two quarterbacks selected number one and two overall in the 1998 NFL draft. Who went first?

Answer: Peyton Manning

The Chargers took Leaf as the number two overall selection. Batch was the 60th pick by the Lions, and Griese was 91st overall by the Broncos. Peyton, in the footsteps of his father quarterback Archie Manning, went to Tennessee and was drafted by the Colts. Amongst Petyon's numerous accomplishments was throwing 49 touchdowns in 1994, breaking the record of Dan Marino. Peyton Manning's first nine seasons saw him as a Pro Bowl selection each year.

In 2006, he was still leading the Indianapolis Colts.
10. Three quarterbacks vied for the top three overall picks in the 1999 draft. Which quarterback from Kentucky was the first selection by the Browns?

Answer: Tim Couch

In the first 12 selections, five were quarterbacks with Cade McNown being the other than those listed. McNabb was second and Smith was third overall. Couch threw for 3040 yards in 2001 with the Browns, but also had a touchdown/INT ratio of 17-21.
