Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While 1990 #1 pick Jeff George never became a Pro Bowl talent, which of these quarterback stats did he once lead the league in?

Answer: Passing yards

Jeff George moved to his third NFL team in 1997 with the Oakland Raiders, having previously played for the Indianapolis Colts (1990-1993) and the Atlanta Falcons (1994-1996). In 1997, George had his best statistical year in the NFL, throwing 29 touchdowns to nine interceptions with a 91.2 passer rating.

His 3917 passing yards led the NFL. Brett Favre, who would go on to win co-MVP in 1997 with Barry Sanders, had the most passing touchdowns. Steve Young had the best completion percentage and passer rating.
2. Defensive tackle Russell Maryland was selected #1 in 1991 by the Dallas Cowboys. He was part of the Cowboys dynasty of the mid 1990s, helping the team to three championships in four seasons. Which season saw Maryland's only Pro Bowl nomination?

Answer: 1993

Maryland was nominated for the 1994 Pro Bowl, which was played by the league's best players throughout the 1993 season. Maryland was a reserve for the game, with John Randle and Sean Gilbert the NFC's starters for the game. Despite never becoming an elite player at NFL level, he retired with three Super Bowl rings, registering 24.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in his decade long career.
The three Super Bowls were: XXVII (played in Jan. 1993), XXVIII (Jan. 1994) and XXX (Jan. 1996).
3. Steve Emtman, a defensive end from Washington, was the first pick in 1992 (by the Indianapolis Colts). His career was marred by injuries, but which of these injuries did he *NOT* suffer during his first three years?

Answer: Broken arm

In his rookie year, Emtman blew out his left knee in a game against the Miami Dolphins, which saw him ruled out for the rest of the year. Emtman suffered the torn patellar tendon in his second year with the Colts in 1993, an injury that no NFL player had ever returned from.

However, after beating the odds and returning in October 1994, he ruptured a disk in his neck in his first game, and by the end of his game was unable to close his fists due to nerve damage. He had short spells with the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins after leaving Indy after the 1994 season, but he was out of the league after the 1997 season.

His last appaearance in the NFL came at the age of 27.
4. In 1993, Drew Bledsoe was selected with the top pick by the New England Patriots. In what year was he inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2011

Bledsoe was inducted after a fan vote in September 2011, where he defeated his former coach Bill Parcells to be inducted. He is credited with helping to bring the Patriots out of the wilderness during his spell with the team between 1993 and 2001. He led the Patriots to four playoff berths and he was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

He also led the NFL in passing yards in 1994. After spells with the Buffalo Bills (2002-2004) and Dallas Cowboys (2005-2006), Bledsoe retired.
5. Dan Wilkinson was the first overall pick in 1994, and was the second player from Ohio State to go #1 overall. Who was the first?

Answer: Tom Cousineau

Wilkinson was taken 15 years after Cousineau, a linebacker who played for the Buffalo Bills. Sims was taken from Oklahoma, Bell played for USC and Patulski went to Notre Dame.
Wilkinson never became a superstar, but he lasted 13 years in the NFL. He played for the Cincinnati Bengals (1994-1997), Washington Redskins (1998-2002), Detroit Lions (2003-2005) and Miami Dolphins (2006). He retired with 54.5 sacks and 388 career tackles.
6. Ki-Jana Carter was taken with the first selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1995. How many rushing touchdowns did Carter have in his NFL career?

Answer: 20

Often considered a bust, Carter was marred by injuries from the moment he entered the NFL. He only started 14 games in his entire career and missed the entirety of the 1995 and 1998 seasons. He ended his career with 20 rushing touchdowns. While he had spells with the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints, these spells did not last long. He retired after leaving the Saints in 2004.
7. 1996 saw wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson go first overall to the New York Jets. He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2000, where he achieved great success. However, which of these personal bests did he achieve with the Jets rather than the Buccaneers?

Answer: Most touchdowns in a season

Johnson had his most catches, receiving yards and longest receiving touchdown during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. In 2001, he caught 106 balls for 1266 yards which were both personal bests. (Albeit he did have two 1000 yards receiving seasons in 1998 and 1999 with the Jets). Johnson's longest ever touchdown reception was a 76-yarder from Brad Johnson in a 2002 Week 5 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

His most touchdowns in a single season was ten, achieved in 1998. His best effort in Tampa Bay was eight, achieved in 2000.

He incredibly only had one touchdown reception in his 106-catch season in 2001.
8. 1997's top pick Orlando Pace was the first #1 selection of the decade to truly materialise into a superstar. Which of these sporting achievements coincidentally occurred in every year that Pace was selected for the Pro Bowl?

Answer: Lance Armstrong wins the Tour de France

Pace was nominated seven times to the Pro Bowl, being selected every year from 1999 to 2005, which were the exact years that Armstrong won his now tainted seven consecutive Tours de France.

The Yankees dominated in a similar era, winning the World Series in 1999 and 2000 and finishing as runner-up in 2001 and 2003. Manchester United won the Premier League in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003, but Arsenal won in 2002 and 2004 while Chelsea won in 2005. The Pats won the AFC East in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005 but the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets won in 1999, 2000 and 2002 respectively.

Pace retired a three-time All-Pro First Team selection, a Super Bowl XXXIV champion was named to the NFL 2000's All-Decade Team. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
9. Eight years on from Jeff George (#1 in 1990 by the Colts), Peyton Manning was a much sounder investment by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998. He holds the NFL record with five MVP awards, but surprisingly he is only a two time NFL Offensive Player of the Year winner. Which of these players did *NOT* win the Offensive Player of the Year award in a year where Manning won MVP?

Answer: LaDainian Tomlinson

Manning won the MVP in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2013 but he missed out on the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2003, 2008 and 2009. Lewis had an incredible season in 2003, rushing for 2066 yards and 14 touchdowns. Brees threw for 5069 yards in 2008, falling just 15 yards shy of Dan Marino's record set in 1984. Johnson won the award in 2009 after an incredible season that saw him run for 2006 rushing yards and break Marshall Faulk's record for most yards from scrimmage in a season with 2509.

While Tomlinson did win the award, this actually occurred in 2006, the same year that he also won MVP.
10. Tim Couch was taken with the first pick by the newly-reborn Cleveland Browns in 1999. Although he is considered a bust, a bright spot of his career was being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week in September 2002 after a dramatic victory against which team?

Answer: Tennessee Titans

The Browns defeated the Titans 31-28 in Week 3 of the 2002 season (they were behind 7-21 at half time). During the game, Couch made 36 completed passes, which was a Browns franchise record. The season was a good one for the forever suffering Browns fans, with the team going 9-7 and making it to the Wildcard Round.

He was unable to stay healthy or consistent, and was out of Cleveland after the 2003 season. Despite numerous attempts at comebacks, Couch never signed for another team.
