Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was this final played?

Answer: Football Park

Hawthorn was the first team to win a final outside its home state since 1991, when they beat West Coast at Subiaco. Football Park was later known as AAMI Stadium.
2. Who commentated the game?

Answer: Bruce McAvaney, Chris Dittmar

Since footy was still on Channel 7, Bruce was still commentating. He later moved to the Fox Footy Channel.
3. Who kicked the first goal of the game?

Answer: Jarrad Schofield

Jarrad wore number 6 for the Power. This goal was the result of a series of controversial free kicks. It was arguable that Mark Graham should have got a free kick further downfield - according to Bruceyboy, however, the kick went unpaid and Schofield went on into an open goal.
4. John Barker did what at half time?

Answer: had a sleep

He had a very heavy headache and nicked off the to the rooms at half time for a little shut-eye. He wasn't expected back but miraculously he did come back to kick 2 timely goals in the last quarter.
5. Which 2 players came off with hamstring injuries after half time?

Answer: Tony Woods and Gavin Wanganeen

Hawks hero, Tony Woods returned to Dippers' amazement in the 4th quarter. Port's reliable backman Wanganeen did not return, which lead in huge part to their demise.
6. In the 3rd quarter, which Port Adelaide player scored 2 goals in a minute to "bring the house down"?

Answer: Che Cockatoo-Collins

This, aided by a goal from Gavin Wanganeen saw Port go into 3-quarter time with a comfortable 8.7 to 5.8 lead, especially given that the game was at Football Park, their home ground. This left Hawthorn at an immediate disadvantage before even the first bounce down, even worse at three-quarter time.
7. Fabian Francis intercepted a Hawthorn handball in the centre square in the last quarter, ran to 50m and had a shot on goal. What was the result of his kick?

Answer: hit the post for a point

It was a low trajectory kick that hit the right goal post. Had he kicked the goal it would have placed Power back in front.
8. Who kicked the final goal in the game?

Answer: John Barker

Johnny is number 27 for the Hawks. He's consistent and reliable but has been injury plagued. He kicked two goals in the final quarter to seal the game for the Hawks, including the last goal of the game.
9. Who finished the game with the ball in their hands?

Answer: Warren Tredrea

The final score was 72-69, Hawks way. Ports big man CHF was on his own on the wing, a paddock in front of him, all he needed was a kick and a mark inside 50m for a shot on goal after the siren .. 4 more seconds!
10. Who won the game and went on to play Essendon in the preliminary final?

Answer: Hawthorn Hawks

The final score was 72-69. The Hawks lost the following week by 9 points. This is my favourite match ever, because it was close. I've never been so nervous or excited about 'Good Ol' Ozzie Rules' before or since the final 5 minutes of that game. It's the closest I've known my boys to get to a Grand Final so I hold it real close to me! And I love it because we overcame the odds to win .. no home ground advantage, disrupted trip over (private plane hired due to trouble with 9/11), bad history for teams playing interstate at finals time.
