The Brisbane Lions were formerly known as the Brisbane Bears and before that, the Fitzroy Lions. When the Football Commission decided to expand the Victorian Football League into a National competition, the Brisbane Bears (Queensland), along with the West Coast Eagles (Western Australia) were selected as their expansion teams. Both entered the competition in 1987.
The Fitzroy Football Club, based in Melbourne and known as the Lions, merged with the Bears in 1996 and they became known as the Brisbane Lions. Since that merger they have enjoyed great success, winning three premierships in successive years, 2001 - 2003.
They were also runners up in 2004. Jason Akermanis (2001) and Simon Black (2002) have both been awarded the Brownlow Medal given for being the best and fairest player in the home and away season.
2. Brown and Gold
Answer: Hawthorn Hawks
Founded in 1902, the year after Australia's Federation, the Hawthorn Football Club has won 13 premierships. Between 1983 and 1989 they played in seven consecutive Grand Finals, winning four of them. They retain an association with the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, with family days, as part of their motto as "The Family Club", regularly held at the Glenferrie Oval.
The team has produced some great players including "Lethal Leigh" Mathews, who was voted in as an inaugural Legend of the Game in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
The club song, sung to the tune of "The Yankee Doodle Boy", is "We're a Happy Team at Hawthorn".
3. Red, White and Black
Answer: St. Kilda Saints
The Saints are an old and respected club, being established in 1873. Their first of their ten Brownlow Medals was awarded in 1925 to Colin Watson. They won their first (and only to date) premiership in 1966. "When the Saints go Marching in" is their team song.
They currently use the Docklands Stadium as their home ground but for many years, were based at the Junction and Moorabbin Ovals. Moorabbin remains its training ground.
4. Royal Blue and White
Answer: North Melbourne Kangaroos
The Kangaroos, as North Melbourne is nicknamed, are one of the oldest clubs in the Australian Football League. Founded in 1869, they train at Arden Street, sharing the Docklands Stadium with other AFL teams as their home ground. They have won four premierships, and thirteen wooden spoons. The club's motto is "Victory Demands Dedication", which is echoed in the opening lines of the club's theme song, "Join the Chorus";
Hearts to hearts and hands to hands,
Beneath the blue and white we stand,
We shout, God bless our native land,
North Melbourne, North Melbourne.
5. Orange, Charcoal and White
Answer: Greater Western Sydney Giants
One of the newcomers to the Australian Football League, the Greater Western Sydney Giants are based in Sydney, with their primary home ground being Spotless Stadium. They were founded in 2009, with football veteran Kevin Sheedy at the helm as head coach.
The team motto is "Think Big. Live Big. Play Big." As at the end of the 2018 season, they had not attained a premiership and had no Brownlow Medal (bestowed on the player voted as best and fairest for the season) recipients.
6. Navy Blue, Red and Gold
Answer: Adelaide Crows
The Adelaide Football Club, known as the Adelaide Crows, were formed in 1990 with the motto "Born to Great Things". Currently based at Adelaide Oval they have secured two premierships in their short history, winning back to back flags in 1997 and 1998.
They also made the Grand Final in 2017 but were defeated on the day by the Richmond Tigers. They have also secured the McClelland Trophy on two occasions by finishing on top of the premiership table, at the end of the home and away season (before the finals), in both 2017 and 2005.
7. Red and White
Answer: Sydney Swans
Originally established in Melbourne in 1874 as the South Melbourne Football Club, the team relocated to Sydney in 1982, thus becoming the first club in their competition to be based outside of Victoria. Based at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the club secured five premierships in its lifetime, three before their relocation and two since.
A very proud club, nicknamed the Swans (previously the Bloods), they are constantly finding some of the best talent in the country. They have produced eleven individual Brownlow Medalists (for the fairest and best in the competition), of whom Adam Goodes is a dual winner and Bob Skilton, a three time recipient.
8. Red and Gold
Answer: Gold Coast Suns
The Gold Coast Suns entered the Australian Football League in 2011 to become the second franchise to be based in the rugby league dominated state of Queensland. They are currently based at Metricon Stadium on the State's Gold Coast and, sadly, cannot brag about any premierships or Brownlow medal winners at this early stage of their life.
However, they have produced two All-Australians in Gary Ablett Jr. (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) and Tom Lynch in 2016. Gary Ablett has also claimed the Leigh Matthews Trophy on two occasions as the Most Valuable Player in the competition, as voted by the AFL Players Association.
9. Purple and White
Answer: Fremantle Dockers
The Fremantle Football Club was formed in 1994 and entered the AFL (Australian Football League) in 1995. Nicknamed the Dockers, due to the City of Fremantle's maritime heritage, the club originally fronted up with a strip boasting four colours - purple, white, red and green.
The latter two were dispensed with in 2012. Whilst they haven't won a flag to date, they did make the Grand Final in 2013, where they were defeated by the Hawthorn Hawks. They do boast a Brownlow Medalist (for the competition's fairest and best for the year) in Nat Fyfe and several All-Australians.
They also have a strong rivalry with cross-town opponents, the West Coast Eagles, and their fierce clashes are eagerly anticipated each year.
10. Black, White, Silver and Teal
Answer: Port Adelaide Power
The Port Adelaide name has a strong history in the South Australian football competition since 1870 and were honoured to be chosen as the second AFL (Australian Football League) franchise to be based in the state (the Adelaide Crows were the first). The Port Adelaide Football Club, nicknamed The Power, entered the AFL in 1997 and, seven seasons later, added the 2004 AFL Premiership to their trophy cabinet.
Their colours in the South Australian competition are stripes of black and white but these were a direct clash with existing AFL club Collingwood so the silver and teal were added to differentiate.
