Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the 2003 Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Funny Cide

Empire Maker was the horse that many people thought would win the Triple Crown, and break the 25-year drought. However, he only won the Belmont Stakes. Peace Rules was another contender (Bloodhorse.com had an article- "Will Peace follow War?"), Secretariat raced and won the Triple Crown in 1973. Funny Cide was the winner, however, of the Kentucky Derby.

It was very unexpected, as no geldings have won the Derby since Clyde Van Dusen in 1929. Funny Cide was also the first New York bred to ever win the Derby.
2. Who won the Preakness Stakes in 2003?

Answer: Funny Cide

Another race that everyone thought Empire Maker would win (the trainer chose to not run Empire Maker). Funny Cide pulled off another victory.
3. Who won the 2003 Belmont Stakes?

Answer: Empire Maker

Empire Maker won this race that took place in the "Empire" state (New York). If the track hadn't been so muddy, Funny Cide probably would have won. Peace Rules wasn't even in this race, his trainer decided to skip it.
4. At which track was the Kentucky Derby held?

Answer: Churchill Downs

Keenland is the other big track in Kentucky, Pimlico is in Maryland, and Belmont is in New York.
5. Where was the Preakness held?

Answer: Pimlico

Pimlico is the main track in Maryland.
6. In what state was the Belmont held?

Answer: New York

The 3rd jewel of the Triple Crown is held in New York.
7. The winner of the Kentucky Derby gets a blanket of what?

Answer: roses

This is why you hear the Derby called the "Run for the Roses".
8. What is the state flower of Maryland?

Answer: black-eyed susan

The state flower is the black-eyed susan, the wild prarie rose is Iowa, the goldenrod is Kentucky, and roses are the New York state flower. The Rudbeckia hirta is the genus and species of the black-eyed susan.
9. Who was the first Triple Crown winner?

Answer: Sir Barton

Sir Barton was the first horse to win the Triple Crown, in 1919. Seabiscuit and Man O' War didn't win, and War Admiral won in 1937. He was the son of Man O' War.
10. The Derby drink is Mint Julep?

Answer: true

Many people drink the Mint Julep on race day.
