Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Secretariat won the Triple Crown of horse racing in 1973. He won the Belmont Stakes by an amazing 31 lengths. Which horse ran second to him in the Belmont?

Answer: Twice a Prince

Secretariat won the Belmont in a track record 2:24. Sham that had run second to him in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, was unable to keep up with the torrid pace "Big Red" was setting and eventually faded to last.
2. In what year did John Loftus ride Sir Barton to horse racing's Triple Crown?

Answer: 1919

Sir Barton is acknowledged as the first horse to win racing's Triple Crown.
3. It is a difficult feat to own the winner of horse racing's Triple Crown. In the 1930s, one owner did it twice. First with Gallant Fox in 1930, and again in 1935 with Omaha, who was this owner?

Answer: Belair Stud Farm

Unbelievable as it sounds, this feat was accomplished again in the 1940s by Calumet Farms. They owned Whirlaway in 1941 and the great Citation in 1948.
4. In 1946, Assault became the first Texan-bred to win the Triple Crown. He was the third Triple Crown winner of the 1940s. What was the nickname given to Assault?

Answer: Club Footed Comet

When Assault was a yearling, he stepped on what was assumed to be a surveyor's stake which punctured his right front hoof. From then on he walked with an unusual limp which was unnoticeable once he began to gallop. After a career of 42 races and 18 wins, he died in September of 1971.
5. Who was War Admiral's sire?

Answer: Man O' War

The 1937 Triple Crown winner was sired by Man O' War. Both Fair Play and Sweep were the Admiral's grandparents.
6. When Count Fleet won the Triple Crown in 1943, who was his jockey for those three races?

Answer: Johnny Longden

Count Fleet had a career record of 16 wins, 4 seconds, and a third in 21 races. After clearly beating Blue Swords in both the Derby and the Preakness, The Count was left to run against two allowance claimers who he handily beat by 25 lengths in the Belmont. Arcaro and Mehrtens would both have their shot at a Triple Crown in future years.
7. In what year did Whirlaway win the Triple Crown?

Answer: 1941

The 1940s were difficult years as the Second World War raged on, but during the decade, the Triple Crown was won on three different occasions. Eddie Arcaro was the jockey on Whirlaway for these races, but was unable to ride the stallion in 1942 due to racing infractions and a one-year suspension.
8. In 1977, horse racing had the first of two consecutive Triple Crown winners. Who won the Triple Crown in 1977?

Answer: Seattle Slew

Seattle Slew faced different difficulties to overcome in each of the classic races, but in the end, The Slew became the first undefeated Triple Crown winner. Many experts believe that Run Dusty Run could have had a legitimate shot at the Triple Crown in any year that he wasn't up against Seattle Slew.
9. Before Secretariat in 1973, one had to go back 25 years to find the last Triple Crown winner. Who won the Triple Crown in 1948?

Answer: Citation

At the end of his 3-year old season, Citation had raced 29 times and won 27 while coming in second twice and winning a unbelieveable 15 races in a row. After taking his career winnings, he was retired to stud as a 6-year old. He died in 1970 at the age of 25 and is buried at Calumet Farm.
10. In 1978, the Triple Crown was won by Affirmed. In all three races, Affirmed was pushed to victory by the same second place finisher. Who came second in each of these three races?

Answer: Alydar

The Belmont of 1978 was one of the most closely contested races in years. Affirmed and Alydar charged stride for stride, side by side down the entire homestretch with the crowd roaring the two to their limit. The race could have gone either way, but in the end, Affirmed pushed his nose into a slim lead to win the year's Triple Crown.

After a brief illness, Affirmed was euthanised in January 2001.
