Vladimir and Julien were in a breakaway for the most part of the stage. Soon Julien dropped Vladimir, but with 9km left in the stage Vladimir caught back up with Julien. The two held off a raging peloton as they raced toward the finish. Julien beat out Vladimir for his first professional victory. Julien took the lead in every classification. Julien rode for Cofidis. Vladimir Duma rode for Ceramica Flaminia-Bossini Docce.
2. In Stage 2 there was a big crash. Only one rider had to quit the race. Who was he?

Answer: Janez Brajkovic

Janez sustained some head injuries from the crash, causing him to drop out of the race. The other riders that were involved in the crash escaped with a few scratches. Janez rode for Astana. The stage came down to a sprint finish, which, Alessandro Petacchi won. He rode for LPR Brakes-Farnese Vini.
