Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stage 11's breakaway was caught by the peloton.

Answer: False

The breakaway succeeded in Stage 11. The break contained five members, Laurent Mangel, Tiziano Dall'Antonia, Fortunato Baliani, Pablo Lastras, and Alessandro Bertolini. Alessandro, who won the stage, rode for Diquigiovanni-Androni. Laurent rode for Ag2r-La Mondiale. Tiziano rode for Française des Jeux. Fortunato rode for CSF Group-Navigare. Pablo rode for Caisse d'Epargne. Alessandro's last-second move propelled him to win the stage. Pablo couldn't counter his move. Giovanni would still maintain the maglia rosa.
2. Stage 12 came down to a sprint finish. Daniele Bennati won by how much over Mark Cavendish?

Answer: 3cm

This was Daniele's third stage win of the 2008 Giro d'Italia. He won Stages 2, 9, and 12. Daniele rode for Liquigas. Mark Cavendish rode for Team High Road. Giovanni would hold his lead in the overall standings, by 5 minutes and 50 seconds over the closest rider. Gabriele Bosisio of L.P.R. Brakes-Ballan was the closest rider, who was in second place.
3. Who won the sprint finish in Stage 13?

Answer: Mark Cavendish

Mark won his second stage in the 2008 Giro d'Italia. He won Stage 3 and 13. He barely beat out Daniele Bennati. Mark is from Great Britain. Giovanni still maintained the maglia rosa when the stage was finished.
4. The maglia rosa changed hands after Stage 14.

Answer: True

Giovanni Visconti lost the lead to Gabriele Bosisio. Gabriele rode for L.P.R. Brakes-Ballan. Giovanni had held the maglia rosa since Stage 5 of the 2008 Giro d'Italia. Emanuele Sella of CSF Group-Navigare, won the stage.
5. Emanuele Sella won Stage 15. How far away was the finish when he launched his attack?

Answer: 12.5km away

Emanuele won two stages in a row, Stage 14 and Stage 15. Emanuele rode for CSF Group-Navigare. Emanuele had the maglia verde and green jersey since Stage 2 of the 2008 Giro d'Italia. No one had it on Stage 1 because there were no mountain points available on that stage. Alberto maintained the maglia rosa for another day.
6. Which of the following did not finish outside the time limit in Stage 16?

Answer: Julian Dean

Julian Dean quit because of injury before Stage 19. Raivis Belohvosciks, Lander Aperribay, and Thomas Fothen all finished outside of the time limit. Lander Aperribay rode for Euskaltel-Euskadi. Raivis Belohvosciks rode for Saunier Duval-Scott. Thomas Fother rode for Gerolsteiner. Franco Pellizotti of Liquigas won the Individual Time Trial. Alberto Contador placed fourth on the stage, but he still maintained the maglia rosa after Stage 16.
7. What team's riders finished first and second in Stage 17?

Answer: Team High Road

André Greipel won the stage and Mark Cavendish placed second. This was Team High Road's third stage win in the 2008 Giro d'Italia. Alberto Contador, after Stage 17, had a 41 second lead over the rider in second. The second placed rider was Riccardo Riccó, of Saunier Duval-Scott.
8. When did Stage 18's breakaway start?

Answer: 9km in to the stage

The break contained 12 riders. The breakaway would succeed. Jens Voight would make a move that would win the stage for him. Jens rode for Team CSC. He would win the stage by one minute and seven seconds over the second place finisher. The second place finisher was Giovanni Visconti. Alberto would still maintain the maglia rosa after Stage 18.
9. Stage 19 was a mountainous stage. What rider launched an attack with 4km to go on the Monte Pora?

Answer: Riccardo Riccó

At the start of Stage 19, Riccardo was only 41 seconds behind Alberto. He was looking to gain those seconds and more when he attacked. He gained 37 seconds on Contador, not enough to steal the maglia rosa away from Alberto. Vasil Kiryienka, of Tinkoff Credit Systems, won the stage.
10. In Stage 20, what rider won their third stage in the 2008 Giro d'Italia?

Answer: Emanuele Sella

Emanuele Sella won Stages 14, 15, and 20. Emanuele rode for CSF Group-Navigare. Emanuele still maintained the maglia verde. He finished one minute and four seconds ahead of the second place rider, Gilberto Simoni of Diquigiovanni-Androni. Alberto would still hold the maglia rosa after the conclusion of Stage 20. He still had the lead of four seconds over Riccardo Riccó.
